Speaker Burrows Delivers for Democrats

Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows announced committee assignments for the House on February 13, granting Democrats more power than ever before. Fifty-eight percent of Democrats were awarded leadership positions, compared with only 40 percent of Republicans.

A full list of committee assignments is available here.

In addition to the power granted to Democrats via committee and subcommittee assignments, the Texas House Administration Committee unanimously approved significant increases to legislative office budgets. This was the first time such increases were made without a full vote on the House floor. In an unprecedented move, Speaker Burrows declared a floor vote unnecessary.

According to Texas Scorecard Senior Editor, Brandon Waltens, “The 30 Democrat vice chairs of committees will receive an additional $5,000 per month, totaling an extra $3.6 million over the biennium. The vice chairs previously did not receive stipends.” That's your taxpayer dollars at work for the Democrats!

Rep. Nate Schatzline (R-Fort Worth) blasted the decision, stating on X, “For the 1st time, House Administration just gave 30 Dem Vice Chair offices a $5k/month raise…WITHOUT a vote of the body!! This leadership team is committed to backroom deals…I’m committed to exposing them.”

Meet the Texas House Speaker Pro Tem, Democrat Rep. Joe Moody of El Paso.

Speaker Burrows also appointed Rep. Joe Moody as Speaker Pro Tempore. Rep. Moody is a leftist who has supported Black Lives Matter (BLM), promoted gun control, and authored legislation to abolish the death penalty (HB 142) and require firearm sales reporting (HB 22).

Does this sound like someone a Republican Speaker of the Texas House should be appointing to ANY leadership position, much less the second-ranking officer in the Texas House?

Understanding the Situation in the Texas House

A Legislative Update From Texas Youth Summit Founder and President Christian Collins

In this 18-minute presentation to the Montgomery County Republican Party of Texas Precinct Chairs, Christian Collins breaks down the situation in the Texas House—from how the Texas House Speaker was chosen with the majority of Democrat House members' votes (including Rep. Will Metcalf and Rep. Cecil Bell, who voted to work with Democrats) to the deceptive tactics Texas House leadership used. Collins also discusses what this means for the conservative legislation Republicans are hoping to pass.

Censure Resolutions Hand-Delivered to Texas House Representatives Metcalf and Bell

In response to the actions taken by Montgomery County Texas House Representatives Will Metcalf (HD 16) and Cecil Bell, Jr. (HD 3), Montgomery County Republican Party Chairman Gwen Withrow formed an ad-hoc Censure Resolution Committee, with Precinct Chair 27/SREC SD4 Dale Inman as Chairman, to determine if their actions met the criteria for such action.

Following the Republican Party of Texas’ (RPT) rules and guidance, the committee found the resolutions were in order. The RPT Rules require that the Representatives be given seven day’s notice of when the County Executive Committee (CEC) will be voting on censure resolutions.

Fast forward to Tuesday, February 25: the committee representative and Precinct 22 Chair Sunday Shibley delivered those resolutions by hand in Austin at the Capitol.

The CEC will be voting on Tuesday, March 4, on the resolutions. Rep. Metcalf and Rep. Bell will be given the opportunity to speak at this meeting. The public is welcome to attend.

Education Committee Tracking Key Bills

Message from MCRP Education Committee Chair Sunday Shibley

Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” The Democrats realized that years ago! That’s why they’ve been working overtime to turn our schools into indoctrination camps. Turns out, the real school supply they care about isn’t pencils or textbooks—it’s propaganda!

The Montgomery County Republican Party's Education Committee is actively monitoring key bills filed in the 89th Texas Legislative Session. If the bills move to the floor for a vote, we will issue a call to action. If you can’t travel to the capital, we will encourage you to submit your testimony online and call and/or email your legislators. Calling your legislator is very important to make your voice heard.

We encourage you to sign up for the party's legislative alert emails for opportunities to support Republican Legislative Priorities.

Visit our website or social media channels for the latest action alerts relating to priority bills as the session progresses.

How to Follow Bills in the 89th Texas Legislature

See above for a helpful video on accessing Texas Legislature Online (TLO), a tool for following bills on your own as they progress through the legislative session. You can use TLO to read relevant bills and set alerts for any bill you are following. It includes a link to watch committee hearings in progress or to follow the proceedings in the House or Senate chamber when they are in session. You can also watch archived committee hearings.

The Importance of Precinct Chairs

Many voters do not know that their first level of representation begins at the local level with their precinct chair. Precinct chairs help citizens register to vote, help voters locate their polling location, and in general assist in any way they can to help voters navigate the political process. In order for your precinct chair to fully represent you, it is important for you to know who your precinct chair is and vice versa.
