Betting Against Texas: The High Price of Expanding Gambling in Our State

“Texas Destination Resorts” ads seem to be everywhere right now. These ads are primarily funded by the Las Vegas Sands Corp., a major casino and resort company, through its backing of the Texas Destination Resort Alliance (TDRA).

The ads urge lawmakers to let Texans vote on “destination resorts,” a euphemism for casinos, and emphasize so-called benefits like education funding and keeping revenue in Texas, rather than losing it to neighboring states. The ads fail to mention the costs of dealing with crime and diminished economic prosperity related to gambling expansion.

Remember that the Texas Lottery was originally marketed as a way to completely fund education in Texas, but the payout has been a measly 3 percent of the budget coupled with a side of corruption and legislative headaches.

With all of the other legislative emergencies currently facing our state, do we really want to roll the dice on expanding gambling in Texas?

How Did My Precinct Chair Vote on the Resolution Censuring Reps. Bell & Metcalf?

Going into the 89th Legislative Session, Republicans across Texas were very hopeful. They had worked hard to send a strong majority to the Texas House (88 of 150 members) and Republicans were poised to accomplish some big things.

Unfortunately, events took a drastic turn when Dustin Burrows and 26 Republicans walked out of the Republican Caucus and joined with the Democrats to elect Burrows as Speaker of the House. Sadly, two House members from Montgomery County were in the group that voted with the Democrats. Those two Representatives are Cecil Bell (HD 3) and Will Metcalf (HD 16).

For their actions in dividing the House Republican Caucus and putting the Texas GOP Legislative Priorities in jeopardy, the Montgomery County Republican Party drafted a county-wide censure resolution against Reps. Bell and Metcalf that passed by a vote of 52-32 on March 4, 2025.

Click below to learn how your Precinct Chair (your representative in the local party) voted on the censure resolution to hold Reps. Bell and Metcalf accountable.

The Gaslighting Continues in the Texas House

If you're a Republican voter, chances are you have been seeing an avalanche of social media posts and receiving texts and emails from various political action groups telling you how wonderful the legislative session is going. But is that the truth?

The Texas House thus far has accomplished the following:

  • Extended Weekends (lasting more than 4 days) – 9
  • Governor Abbott’s Emergency Items Acted upon – 0
  • Bills Passed – 0
  • Republican Legislative Priority Bills Advanced – 0
  • Substantive Resolutions Passed – 0
  • Resolutions Honoring Beyoncé – 1 (This really happened instead of focusing on Property Tax Relief.)
  • Resolutions Honoring Zoroastrianism (pre-Islamic religion) – 1 (This is not a joke.)

Let’s take a look at how it’s going under Speaker Dustin Burrows’ leadership with the House Rules he put forth that give expanded powers to Democrats.
