The Capital Campaign

is coming!

We would like to provide an update regarding our Capital Campaign expansion project. While we had originally hoped to begin groundbreaking sooner, the timeline has shifted and groundbreaking is now anticipated for late summer. Although these delays are outside of SMILES’ control, we understand this news may be disappointing to many of our volunteers, supporters, and especially our generous donors who have so passionately invested in the future of SMILES. Please know that our staff and Board of Directors are working diligently alongside all involved partners to keep the project moving forward as smoothly and efficiently as possible. We remain incredibly grateful for the patience, encouragement, and continued belief in our mission throughout this process. Your support means so much to our organization, and we look forward to sharing more updates as we continue moving toward this exciting next chapter for SMILES.

Executive Director Update

Thank you all for the warm welcome I have received as the new Executive Director here at SMILES. In my first month, I have truly enjoyed meeting and getting to know so many of you - our incredible volunteers. I continue to be amazed by the dedication, compassion, and generosity each of you brings to SMILES. Whether you are helping behind the scenes, supporting our programs, caring for the horses, or simply showing up with a willingness to help, your impact is felt every single day. Quite simply, we could not fulfill our mission without you, and I am so grateful to be part of such a caring and compassionate community.

Marketing and Development Coordinator Update

Please help us in welcoming our new Marketing and Development Coordinator.... Caroline!!!

Originally from the Chicago suburbs, Caroline’s passion for horses began at a young age, and she spent her childhood and teen years riding competitively, until college, where she earned her degree in Speech Language Pathology from the University of Illinois. Since then, she has always found her way back to horses, and after moving to the area in 2025, she began her journey as a volunteer at SMILES, and quickly discovered a second home among the staff, volunteers, and the herd. Now, Caroline is thrilled to transition into her role as the Marketing and Development Coordinator. When she isn’t at the barn, you can find her crafting, baking, or spending time outside.

April's Shockwave Treatment!

Many of you may have noticed that towards the end of a very busy Spring Session, April was telling us she was getting sore. Watch this video of Dr. Ashley Slater giving her a Shockwave treatment, and how this helped April get through the rest of the session with comfort.

June Volunteer Spotlight

Gail Magnuson-Kowalski!!

How did you find out about SMILES and how long have you been volunteering here?

I started volunteering at SMILES about nine years ago. I met Barb Bobbi at an exercise class in Janesville. She was wearing a SMILES T-shirt, I was intrigued by the logo, asked her about the organization, retirement was just around the corner and I was looking for volunteer possibilities. Over the next couple of months Barb spoke of the wonderful things happening at SMILES. A month after I retired, I visited, fell in love with the organization and started volunteering.

Tell us who your favorite SMILES horse is and a special memory you have with them:

There are so many wonderful horses at SMILES. My favorite two were from a while back: Stanley and Tapper. Stanley was handsome and loving, he would always come for a pet when I called his name. Tapper was a stinker….literally. He would be lovely while I groomed him but when it came to cleaning his hooves, he would put all his weight on the hoof I was trying to clean, if I shifted to the other side, he would shift his weight to that hoof. I always had to get someone else to finish the job.

What is a memory with a horse, client, another volunteer at SMILES that you treasure?

There are so many individual memories that will remain with me from SMILES but the kindness, caring and love I see from staff and volunteers towards clients and towards each other are the memories that will stay with me.

What is the best part of volunteering at SMILES for you?

The moment you turn into the driveway of SMILES you know that you will be greeted with joy and happiness just because you are there. The volunteers I work with are some of the finest people you would ever want to know. I feel blessed that a T-shirt, I questioned about so many years ago, led me to this place, these people, these clients and most especially these horses.

Do you think any of our SMILES horses reminds you of a famous celebrity and why?:

I can’t think of any horse/celebrity connections but there are a few horsey personalities (exhibited now and then) that remind me of students from my former life (all stemming from a place of love).
