Einstein on Peace: "...I have become a kind of enfant terrible in my new homeland, due to my inability to keep silent and to swallow everything that happens there." "Unfortunately, the most farsighted among the people in this country have been so intimidated by the pseudo-patriotic pressures to which they have been exposed that their scope for effective action has been greatly reduced."

Sanctions: Another form of war on
designated enemies

EXCERPTS:
The Charter of the United Nations (UN), established in San Francisco in 1945, begins with noble goals, including saving succeeding generations from the scourge of war, and reaffirming faith in fundamental human rights. The UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), proclaimed in Paris in 1945, noted that “disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind,” and affirmed that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” The specific rights to which all human beings are entitled include, among many others: “a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services….” as expressed in Article 25 of the UDHR.
Both the UN and illegal US sanctions have had disastrous effects on millions of people in former colonies of the Council powers, effects that violate both the UN charter and the UDHR. Research in 69 countries showed that sanctions lowered infant weight and increased the likelihood of death before age three. In 2021, because of UN official sanctions and US unauthorized sanctions, one million children in Afghanistan were on the brink of starvation. In Iran, US sanctions, particularly as increased by President Trump, and sustained by President Biden, have led directly or indirectly to the deaths of countless Iranians. In Cuba, Oxfam recently noted that “[it] has witnessed how the US embargo limits Cubans’ capacity to recover from [health-related] setbacks and curtails access to needed inputs, medicines, technologies, and materials to rebuild”. TO OUR READERS: I asked Democratic World Federalist Board member Fritz Pointer if DWF NEWS could share his sister Anita's reaction to "Anyway" by Mother Teresa. Anita, from the famous singing group The Pointer Sisters, definitely gave a "thumbs up" to this powerful message! -- Roger Kotila (DWF NEWS)

From: Anita POINTER
Thank you, Fritz, I LOVE THIS POEM, Anita,
I think of you every time I read this poem, "Anyway" and I've read it a lot. It's become a kind of philosophy of life for me. It's really a song. Remember that Bob Marley transformed the speech and words of Haile Selassie to the United Nations into the song "War." These words have that kind of potential, but not in my wheelhouse. What a lovely interview, today, with you and Michele
Anyway
People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered.
~Love them anyway.
If you do good, people may accuse you of selfish motives.
~Do good anyway.
If you are successful, you may win false friends and true enemies.
~Succeed anyway.
The good you do may be forgotten tomorrow.
~Do good anyway.
Honesty and openness make you vulnerable.
~Be honest and open anyway.
What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
~Build anyway.
People you really want to help may attack you if you help them.
~Help them anyway.
Give the world the best you have and you may get hurt.
~Give the world your best anyway.

How to Move From Hostility to Cooperation
in the UN Security Council
|
|
EXCERPTS:
The foremost conflict manager in the world is the United Nations. The Security Council is tasked with maintaining world peace and security for everybody’s benefit. The key decision-makers are the permanent five (P5) members, Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States, and the status of their relationships determines what the Council can achieve.
Now, like during the Cold War, the relations among the permanent members are mostly hostile, with lots of tension and blame going around. There is no sincere listening to others’ concerns and respect for diverging viewpoints and national interests. This dynamic must change, as the world expects the Security Council to play its role in maintaining international peace and security to the benefit of us all. A new spirit of cooperation could spill over to solving other common interests of humankind as well. READ MORE on Pass Blue.

Settler Pogroms Against Palestinians Will Become The Norm Under New Israeli Government
|
|
EXCERPTS:
[A few weeks ago...] 30,000 [(Israeli Jewish) settlers converged on the city of Al-Khalil where they, along with the Israeli military, proceeded to terrorize local Palestinians. Even as they invaded Palestinian homes, destroyed shops and attacked people in the streets, the Israeli army was ordering Palestinians to close their shops and leave the area, thus permitting the Israeli settlers to riot without interruption.
The Israeli media described what happened in Al-Khalil as a pogrom. Pogroms were known as murderous riots perpetrated against Jews throughout Eastern Europe and usually resulted with entire communities destroyed and countless dead. This riot in Al-Khalil was by no means the first riot by the settler movement. It was, however, the first open riot since the Israeli elections. The election results gave the leaders of the settler movement unprecedented power, and it is expected that they will now be given influential cabinet and sub-cabinet positions, as well as control over important parliamentary committees and appropriation of government funds. This means more money and more licenses than ever before to build and to displace Palestinians.
Palestinians are provided no security, no safety and no protection by anyone. The Israeli authorities are certainly not going to provide security or protection for Palestinians who are terrorized by the army or by groups of Israeli Jewish vigilante gangs. The international community is unwilling to intervene, and the United Nations has no means of enforcing its resolutions regarding Israel. READ MORE

END THE BLOCKADE ON GAZA
Gaza Freedom Flotilla Coalition Escalates Solidarity With Palestine
Margaret Flowers
|
|
EXCERPTS:
As the Israeli State intensifies its violence against and displacement of Palestinians from their homes, international Palestinian solidarity organizations are making new plans to challenge the illegal Israeli occupation. Clearing the FOG speaks with retired Colonel Ann Wright who recently represented the US Boats to Gaza campaign at a meeting of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla Coalition in the United Kingdom. Ann Wright has participated in five trips to confront the blockade of Gaza and deliver desperately-needed supplies, including when Israeli Occupying Forces attacked the ships and killed ten civilians. Wright talks about the new plans for 2023, the dire conditions that Palestinians experience in Gaza and what people in the United States can do considering that the US provides financial support and political cover for Israel’s atrocities.
Col. (ret.) Ann Wright spent 29 years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves. In 1987, Col. Wright joined the Foreign Service and served as U.S. Deputy Ambassador in Sierra Leone, Micronesia, Afghanistan, and Mongolia. She received the State Department’s Award for Heroism for her actions during the evacuation of 2,500 people from the civil war in Sierra Leone, at the time the largest evacuation since Saigon...
On March 19, 2003, the eve of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Ann Wright cabled a letter of resignation to Secretary of State Colin Powell, stating that without the authorization of the UN Security Council, the invasion and occupation would be a violation of international law....
She has traveled to Gaza three times in 2009 following the Israeli attack on Gaza that killed 1,440 and wounded 5,000. She also visited Gaza in 2011 and 2012. She was an organizer for the 2009 Gaza Freedom March that brought 1,350 persons from 44 countries to Cairo, Egypt, in solidarity with the people of Gaza. READ MORE
