Flags for Heroes
for
Rotary Club of Durham
This is a month-long celebration to honor local veterans and other service providers such as first responders, healthcare workers, and teachers.
The celebration will include the flying of 600 flags, which can be purchased in honor of a loved hero, planted on the Hub RTP campus in the heart of the Triangle.
There will be two special events:
All of the proceeds will support local nonprofits addressing shelter, food insecurity, and healthcare issues, primarily for local veterans and first responders.
This is a great Community Service opportunity!
Scout adults and youth are needed for this project to assemble the 600 flags and medallions, lay all the stakes in the ground, then mount it altogether.
Main Tasks:
- Putting flags together from a kit. Each Flag takes about 3-5 min.
- Medallion Assembly is adhering labels with the Sponsor/Hero name on to the back of each medallion. Adhering the printed labels to each medallion takes 2-3min.
Troop/Crew Leaders can decide where and which shifts fit scouts best.

Dear Unit Leaders & Committee Chairs,
I’m asking for your help to beef up our district committee. Will you please ask around with your leaders and parents. Even if they don’t fully understand the role, we will "hire" for attitude and train for experience.
Please contact Dennis Culin, the District Nominating Committee Chair, at Dennis.Culin@gmail.com if you know someone who would be interested in helping in the following positions.
If you would rather we (district leadership and nominating committee) ask directly for the help, please pass along your recommendations and we’ll reach out to them.
DISTRICT POPCORN KERNEL
This is our most urgent need right now. This person would coordinate unit orders and distribution. There is a council meeting this coming week, then the majority of the work is between August and early December.
CUB TARGET SPORTS
This event will be May 24 at Union Grove UMC. We need some adults or Scouts to help with on-site registration, setup, tear down, and staffing activities (the shooting sports would be under the direction of the rangemasters).
DISTRICT MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE
Also a very high priority. The membership committee assists units with their recruiting efforts, staffs Scouting America booths (we have 2 upcoming events at the Durham Bulls), and assists the district staff with new unit startups.
NOTE: One of our goals is to increase our outreach into the Hispanic community, so people of Hispanic heritage are desired for this - even if they don’t speak Spanish
CIVIC SERVICE COMMITTEE
These folks would identify occasional civic service opportunities and coordinate with the units in the district. This could involve running a specific event, or coordinating with a non-profit and encouraging units to participate.
NOMINATING COMMITTEE
A few people are needed to help with recruiting adult leaders for district committees (as I’m doing with this email).
ADMIN
If you have someone willing to help, but doesn’t want to join the committee, there are a couple admin tasks we can use help with, such as taking minutes at the district committee meetings.
Thank you very much for any support you can recruit!

MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT CHAIR
I’m excited to share our calendar of events, planned out through mid 2028. Of course, we have our usual events of Camporees, Pinewood Derby, Merit Badge College and training. We’ve also added a number of other activities this year.
Each district will run a Cub big adventure during the summer, with Eno River starting on May 24 with target sports. Sandhills will run a Cub day camp in June, Cardinal a STEM event in July, and North Star a fishing derby in August.
The Durham Bulls have 2 camping nights, which I included on the calendar. We are working with Haw River Canoe & Kayak to setup a canoe / kayak adventure, and have coordinated with Morehead Planetarium to setup a Cub Scout night and Scouts BSA night (November & January are the tentative dates).
We are also looking to bring back Webelos Woods, for Webelos & AOLs, and a First Aid contest for Scouts BSA. We’ll let you know when we have dates for these.
All of these take some volunteer work to get setup. If you have a passion about one of these events, please let me know.

DE MINUTE
Hey y'all!
With the weather warming up, folks are getting active in the community. The summer is the best time to get potential members involved in a pack, troop, ship, crew, or post. Families are looking for opportunities to be involved. Participating in local community events, recruiting from pools and trampoline parks, and engaging the online local community groups will assist in supporting unit growth.
If you would like assistance with these efforts, please give me a call or text at 919-446-1735.
Yours in Scouting,
M. Dawn Greenwood
