Our goal is to rescue stray dogs of any breed off the streets of Detroit that are injured, sick or that are in imminent danger and need immediate medical attention.

URGENTLY NEEDED

September 2020 has been another busy month for us here at Detroit Pit Crew. We rescued several dogs that were severely injured or sick most of which required expensive veterinary care, totaling close to $18,000. At one point this month we became overrun with dogs and veterinary bills which caused us to have to go on temporary intake hold. We know that we ask a lot from our supporters but without your help we would not be able to provide care for the most destitute dogs in Detroit. Please consider donating to help us continue our mission to rescue the destitute, injured, and sick homeless dogs left wandering the streets. BAILEY
Rescued extremely sick and later died at an emergency vet hospital of leptospirosis
PETUNIA
10 day old puppy surrendered to us with cleft lip/palate
PEEWEE
Rescued extremely sick from leptospirosis and later died at emergency vet hospital
CONNOR
Rescued in Detroit in horrible condition and had to have his leg amputated
BOBBIE
Rescued after being hit by a car and later died despite our best efforts
TINY BIT
6 week old puppy surrendered to us very sick
MAXX
Rescued in Detroit after being shot in the face. He spent 8 days hospitalized and then was released
GIZMO
Rescued with eye hanging out and was rushed to emergency vet where his eye had to be removed
DIVA
Rescued in Detroit after spending 4 days on the porch of a resident who called us for help
HOLLY
Rescued in critical condition and died at vet of leptospirosis and suspected distemper
GEORGIA
Rescued after she was thrown out by her owner who didn't want her because she was having severe seizures
DARLA
Rescue running the streets, severely matted with her rectum hanging out and had maggots
STEPPING DOWN FROM MACOMB COUNTY P.A.W.S. TASK FORCE

Our organization has held a Board position for the Macomb County P.A.W.S. Task Force since it was formed in 2019. This task force was created to operate as a multijurisdictional animal protection unit to combat and prevent animal abuse and cruelty in the County of Macomb. It was formed by the Macomb County Prosecutor’s office.

Earlier this month we became aware of a small puppy being abused in Eastpointe, MI. The abuse was caught on video and was reported to and investigated by local police. The local police sent a warrant request to the Macomb County prosecutor’s office, which sat in their office for close to 4 weeks until it was finally denied. In our opinion, the evidence presented in this case was compelling enough to at minimum order the immediate removal of the puppy. Due to the lack of prompt response and overall inappropriate manner in which the prosecutor’s office handled the victim, an 8-10 week puppy has remained in the hands of the abusers. 

Our organization continues to fight for justice in these cases and we chose to step down from our Board position with the P.A.W.S. task force. We cannot be part of a task force run by a prosecutor’s office who clearly disregarded the safety and wellbeing of an animal that was being abused with conclusive video evidence to back up the witnesses' statements. We are disappointed in the Macomb County Prosecutor’s office and feel that their actions, or rather lack thereof, directly endangered the life of a voiceless animal.

Lepto and You

We will keep the learning going this month with some notes on a bacterial infection called Leptospirosis. I think this infection is especially frustrating because it targets the kidneys so this means that signs of illness can be vague. Some signs include: fever, lethargy, inappetence, vomiting. Other potential signs include yellowing of the skin, abdominal pain, weight loss. This means that testing will need to be performed with your veterinarian in order to identify and treat leptospirosis.   

As every amazing pet-owner you are asking, how do I keep my pups from this? Our dogs pick it up from contaminated water and urine from infected wildlife. Please take care with your dogs around standing water or known high-traffic wildlife areas. One of the best preventative measures is to get your dog vaccinated as a puppy and maintain those vaccines throughout their life. This bacterial infection can pass from pets to people so if you are experiencing these signs too please see your primary care doctor.  It will also be important if you feel your pet is exhibiting any of the above signs to follow-up quickly with your primary care veterinarian as early detection and treatment is best.
