Congresswoman Julia Brownley Visits the Simi Valley Senior Center

On August 26th, Congresswoman Julia Brownley visited the Simi Valley Senior Center to learn more about the programs and services available to residents aged 50 and better. Her visit provided a firsthand look at the Center’s vibrant daily activities, including fitness classes, games, meetings of hobby and interest groups, and educational presentations on topics relevant to older adults.

During her tour, staff and volunteers shared concerns about the impact of recent federal funding cuts to senior nutrition programs such as Meals On Wheels and Food Share, which play a vital role in supporting food security for local seniors. Each month, over 3,500 meals are delivered to homebound seniors, as well as 518 bags of groceries to Senior Share participants.

To learn more about senior services or Meals On Wheels, visit the Senior Center's website.

Stay Clear of Recycling and Organics Contamination

Help keep Simi Valley clean and sustainable! Waste Management reminds residents to only place acceptable items in your recycling and organics carts. Contamination, when the wrong items end up in the wrong cart, makes it harder and more costly to recycle.

In Your Organics Cart (Green):

✅ Food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard waste (bagged in paper or plastic)

❌ No plastics, foam cups, compostable serve ware, pet waste, or hazardous waste

In Your Recycling Cart (Blue):

✅ Empty and dry bottles, cans, glass, paper, and flattened cardboard

❌ No bagged recyclables, food/liquid, loose plastic bags, clothing, or furniture

Waste Management will begin using Smart Truck Camera technology to identify possible contamination in recycling carts. Starting October 1, fees will be assessed for contamination.

Keeping carts clean ensures materials are recycled properly and reduces landfill waste. Together, we can keep Simi Valley a greener community!

To learn more, view the Waste Management Recycling Guidelines.
