PICTURE BOOK
Just Because
By Mac Barnett, Isabelle Arsenault (Illustrator)

A perfect book for any child who asks endless why questions and for any adult who has answered those endless questions. Mac Barnett's creative and inspired answers and Isabelle Asenault’s gorgeous and retro-feeling artwork make this my new favorite bedtime book. Magical and lovely!  — Holly (RBB Staff)
MIDDLE GRADE
My Jasper June
By Laurel Snyder

Leah’s family is stuck in a holding pattern after what happened a year ago. Her parents are like ghosts, her friends are pulling away, and Leah feels like she might never be happy again. But when she stumbles upon Jasper—a strange, slightly mysterious, and absolutely wonderful girl—everything changes. Leah and Jasper fit perfectly together, like they were meant to be friends. But as their summer adventures continue, Leah learns that Jasper is concealing a secret as painful as her own. A warm, molasses-y summer sort of book: sweet, hopeful, with perfect dark notes and a gentle sharpness. Read this book—you won’t regret it (even though it will make you cry).    — Lily (RBB Staff)
YOUNG ADULT
Frankly in Love
By David Yoon

Korean American friends Frank and Joy come up with a scheme so they can date the people they know their parents will disapprove of. Through Frank we see how race and identity affect all his relationships--friends, parents, extended family, and romantic interests, all in an engaging, often humorous, and always heartfelt story.    — Joan (RBB Staff)
ADULT
The Ungrateful Refugee: What Immigrants Never Tell You
By Dina Nayeri

A gorgeous piece of writing, part memoir of the author's childhood as a refugee and part compassionate journalism about the current refugee crisis. Nayeri shows the unique emotional trauma of being a refugee—the waiting, the uncertainty, the displacement, the culture shock. And she leads us to question the things Western nations demand from refugees in exchange for asylum—a convincing story of danger narrowly escaped, boundless gratitude, and total assimilation. This book asks: What do we owe to refugees? And isn't it more than what we're offering now? — Lily (RBB Staff)
