Lucy Bell, a 7 month old terrier mix, was found wandering the streets in Lockhart, Tx. She was picked up by a local citizen and taken to the Lockhart animal shelter in December 2021. She was starving, underweight, her toe nails were brittle and cracked, and she was covered with urine and lots of nasty fecal stains on her coat. The Lockhart Ladies took great care of her and she isn't the same dog today.
However, Lucy was a challenge. One of her handlers, Lateres, reported, "she was scared of everything, not trusting anyone. Most of us thought she was a hopeless case. Soon Lucy Bell proved us wrong. Our hearts opened up to her. She began to trust that we wasn't going to hurt her."
Michelle, another handler, said "we all quickly fell in love with her and she quickly responded to that love. She was eager to please and easy to train." Another handler, Nekki, told us "She also wasn't real sure how to play...it took her awhile before she understood that every bit of trust she gave me was breaking down my guard as well. She's an amazing little girl."
Prison can be a difficult place for some dogs (and for people too!) especially one who is fearful. As time went on, the handlers began having difficulty with her, so Ms. L (the name the inmates call the Paws in Prison program director), took Lucy to her own training and boarding business, knowing that the new environment would be better for her.

One of the staff trainers, Emily, shown here with Lucy, saw how smart she was and volunteered to be her foster mom last August. Emily is also the mom of Glory, a 9 year old pit bull mix. Glory is picky about who she accepts as a playmate, but in no time at all Lucy and Glory became best friends. As a foster mom, Emily introduced Lucy to several various dog sport activities, and Lucy took to all of them. |

Well you probably guessed it, Emily adopted Lucy last October. Emily says, "Lucy's new life is the result of a bunch of people who came together to support her." It began with the Lockhart good Samaritan who took her off the streets and brought her to the shelter; the Paws in Prison director Ms. L who brought her into the Paws in Prison dog dorm then to her own kennel facility; the inmates who loved and cared for her; and of course Emily, who saw her promise and gave her a forever home. As we have seen over and over at Paws in Prison, the power of unconditional love wins out, and not just for the dogs.

2. IT'S TIME! STARTING AT 6PM MARCH 1! |

We're sorry to repeat ourselves, but this is too important not to remind you about - our biggest fundraiser of the year, Amplify Austin Day. On this important day of giving, anyone can donate to the registered Amplify Austin Day nonprofits. Each donation is "amplified" because of matching grants and prizes. The funds donated each year on this important day are a large part of the Friends of Paws in Prison annual income.

3. OUR HOUR OF POWER IS BETWEEN 10PM - 11PM TONIGHT, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1.

We call this our HOUR OF POWER. We need as many of you as possible to donate during this hour because a prize is awarded to a small, medium and large nonprofit who has the most donations in each hour! The minimum donation amount required is only $5.
But if you are not able to donate then, don't forget us through the rest of the 24 hours of giving, which culminates at 6pm on Thursday, March 2.

4. OUR AMPLIFY AUSTIN MATCHING GRANT
An Anonymous Donor has given us a $5,000 matching grant to help encourage donations. That means every dollar you donate to Friends of Paws in Prison through Amplify Austin will be doubled! And it is not too late to add a matching grant. If you would like to commit to a matching grant by check, please send an email for instructions to:

Additionally there are other prizes and grants that are prorated to nonprofits based on either total donation amounts or the total number of individual donors.

Our $5,000 grantor wants to be certain we will have the funds in 2023 to meet the medical needs of all the rescued dogs in our program. Shelters are financially hurting with inflation and an overflow of pets so many have discontinued providing immunizations and/or spay/neuter surgeries. Rescued shelter dogs sometimes need additional medical treatment as well. |

This photo shows one of our rescued pups who had a tumor on his leg. Thankfully it was benign and because of our wonderful supporters, we were able to provide the funds required for the surgery.
Every dog we rescue is given a clean bill of health
before being eligible for adoption.
