Dip switches and jumpers are used to adjust the way peripheral devices communicate with machines like protocols and baud rates.

A few common examples:

GEN 5 Printers. There is a pack of dip switches under the rubber boot (if it's still there) behind the USB socket. I've had to set the dip switches to work on a Bally or SG game.

JCM UBA may have jumpers underneath that need to be switched to work with different vendors. See this image for details UBA 10/11 Jumpers

JCM Ivision's have jumpers under the bill transport head under the clear plastic. You'll have to remove a couple of screws to access them.

My best advice is if it doesn't work off the shelf compare the switches with the device removed or the game next to it.
