Our end of the season one-two punch of Jumaane Smith Quartet this Friday followed by a return visit from Hanzhi Wang on Monday evening represents the best of what we want to bring you at Baruch PAC. Both are younger artists, not necessarily well-known names, but both are extraordinary talents who have impressed me and others on the Baruch PAC team with their talent and versatility, and in the case of Hanzhi, we were so wowed by her last year that we wanted to be sure to bring her back.
That’s sensibility that brought Wakka Wakka to our Nagelberg Theatre this past winter with Dead as a Dodo, yielding a Drama Desk Award nomination for the puppetry of Kirjan Waage, an affirmation that the work we’re offering is being seen and appreciated by cultural arbiters who examine work across the city. Having already invoked a boxing metaphor in the first paragraph, I’ll continue to say that it shows we’re punching above our weight, even if cultural offerings tend to steer of the boxing ring.
Even as these concerts are on offer, we’ll also have the annual residency of Heartbeat Opera, a small but mighty troupe whose reputation has only grown during the years they’ve been producing in partnership with us at Baruch. While they’ve grown so much that they’ve had to move beyond their two-show rep schedule of years past, we’re already well into planning for them to be with us again in 2026, so get in now to see one of the great New York emerging opera companies, this year presenting a new take on the classic Faust. Oh, and if you liked Dodo, there are puppets afoot here as well.
To everyone who has visited Baruch PAC this year, my thanks for including us in your cultural calendar. And if you haven’t yet been here (and even if you have), you have three different chances in the next two weeks. I hope we’ll see you.
Sincerely,

Heartbeat Opera's Faust Brings
Puppets to to a classic at Baruch PAC
| | Video of "Faust Puppeteers in Conversation" | | Photo of Rehearsal from FAUST. | | In the classic German legend, Dr. Faust, based off the historical Johann Georg Faust, makes a deal with the devil for unlimited knowledge. This story was popularized by the Elizabethan Play "The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus" by Christopher Marlowe. In Marlowe's adaptation, we see multiple heavenly creatures, i.e. angels, demons, Mephistopheles, and Lucifer. Each with their own motives in intersecting with Faust on his journey for unbound knowledge. Heartbeat Opera's new adaptation of Gounod's opera will use elements of light, shadow, and puppetry to portray the haunting creatures of the Faustian legend. | | More About the Puppetry in FAUST | |
