Labyrinth Reflections
This past Saturday, six of us gathered for a labyrinth meditation at the Furman University Labyrinth beside Daniel Chapel. For some, praying while walking the circuitous path of the labyrinth is a familiar practice– but for most it was a completely new mode of engaging the divine presence.
The incorporation of labyrinths into Christian worship spaces began as a way to make the spiritual benefits of pilgrimage available to all, not just those with the financial resources and physical ability to embark on journeys to holy sites. And so as a way to walk alongside our Rector, Father Gary, in his sabbatical season, we too embarked on a small pilgrimage practice together.
As opposed to a maze punctuated by dead ends and the risk of getting lost, a labyrinth is unicursal: there is one path serving as both entrance and exit. This allows the individual walking the path to embrace the seemingly roundabout journey, which proves to be just as valuable as arrival at the heart of the space. In our labyrinth walk, each participant held a small stone as a focal point of intercessory prayer; while walking to the center, each of us focused prayer on a wound in need of divine healing within ourselves, another, and/or the world. After carrying this stone to the center, each individual surrendered the prayer request (and the stone) to God and then made the slow meditative journey back to the entrance.
Reflecting on this practice, participants shared beautiful insights about the journey of faith:
- While we may feel we are walking the path alone, God often provides companions behind and before us.
- We are frequently unaware of the burden those around us carry.
- Entrusting those things we care deeply about to God is both a relief and a challenge.
- Sometimes we feel discouraged and far from God, and then unexpectedly we turn a corner and are face to face with God.
As we all continue the journey of faith, remember that we are called to serve as companions to one another. While the journey may feel frustrating, futile, or even too much to bear, because of Jesus we trust that walking in the way of patient love is none other than the way of life.

Save the Date! Confirmation Class| Wednesdays, September 16 - October 21| Parish Hall
Interested in learning more about our the bible, church history, and teachings of the church? Join us for Confirmation classes beginning Wednesday September 16, 2026. Confirmation is a sacramental rite in the Episcopal Church, in which an individual "express(es) a mature commitment to Christ, and receive(s) strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop" (Book of Common Prayer, p. 860). Confirmation is a wonderful opportunity to reaffirm the faith professed in baptism, and to develop friendships with fellow companions in the journey of faith. Choir Rehearsal Update
Now through Labor Day, Sunday morning choir rehearsals will take place at 9:30 AM in the Parish Hall with the piano. Starting September 13, we will begin rehearsal at 9:00 AM in the Parish Hall before moving to the sanctuary at 9:30 AM for the remaining time. Please make a note of this change. Additionally, we plan to resume weekly mid-week rehearsals on Thursday, September 10 at 7:00 PM in the Parish Hall. If you have any questions, please email Leslie.

We are delighted to be embarking on our second full academic year of offering Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to some of our youngest parishioners. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an approach to Christian formation that builds upon Montessori methods of learning — starting with a fundamental awareness that a deep bond between God and each child already exists. This relationship produces a desire to draw ever closer to God. Within Catechesis, we seek to nourish and encourage this desire for deeper relationship—drawing forth joy and wonder in the child (and in the adults who get to be a part of this good work!). If you have any questions, feel free to speak with Laura Rhodes or Cheryl Banks, who serve as our lead catechists. More details with registration forms will go out via e-mail to parents later this month.

| Sunday Altar Flower and Presence Candle Dedications | |
On Sundays, we have the opportunity to offer a special dedication of the altar flowers or presence candle in honor, memory, or celebration of loved ones. The cost to the church for altar flowers is now $100 per Sunday, so we are suggesting that donations for dedicating altar flowers be in the range of $50 to $100 to help us cover those costs. The suggested donation for a presence candle dedication is $10.
If you would like to sign up for a Sunday, please see the sign up sheet on the bulletin in the Parish Hall or click on the button below. You may place a check in the offering plate with "Altar Flowers" or "Presence Candle" noted in the memo.
We will continue to only have Altar Flowers if someone has signed up and paid for the arrangements. As a result, we will need to know by the Tuesday prior to the upcoming Sunday if you would like to sign up.

Feed Thy Neighbor
Founded in 2010, Feed Thy Neighbor is a cooperative effort of the Episcopal community in Greenville. Parish volunteers from Saint Andrew’s, St. Peter’s, St. James, and Christ Church feed the hungry each Saturday from 7:30 to 8:30 AM. We are seeking volunteers to help serve and clean up.
