Called to Worship. Sent to Witness. Led to Welcome.
Giving Thanks for the Work that God is Doing in This Place
As was evident as we gathered for the Blessing of the Backpacks in a crowded church this past Sunday, we have a lot to celebrate and give thanks for at Saint Andrew’s right now. As we celebrate our 125th Anniversary over the course of this year, we can give thanks for all of the parishioners whose faithfulness in worship, witness, and welcome has brought us to this day—as we dedicate ourselves and our parish to continuing in faithful stewardship of these many gifts in the years ahead.
As our guest preacher, Mtr. Molly McGee Short, reminded us through her reflection on this past Sunday’s lectionary readings (and drawing upon Rev. Sam Wells’ book, Improvisations), God is constantly overaccepting our gifts and offerings – by taking what we, with our limited understanding, offer to God and to one another and then transforming those gifts into an glorious abundance that we could have never imagined or intended on our own. And it is through that process of God’s overacceptance that a small parish like Saint Andrew’s can come to be a place in which people encounter God’s love in surprising ways and are called to service in ways that they never would have predicted.
As the slower pace of summer comes to a close and we start new programs and plan for the road beyond our 125th Anniversary Year, I encourage you to think about how you might give thanks for God’s overacceptance of our gifts and offerings at Saint Andrew’s – how your prayers and praise might be a means by which God continues to make Christ’s transformative love known here at the corner of Markley and Main.
Grace & Peace,
Fr. Gary+

125th Anniversary Celebration Continues in September with Visit from Episcopal Church Historian and Oxford Movement Scholar, The Rev. Dr. Ben King
September 6 & 7
In September, we are looking forward to welcoming Episcopal Church historian, The Rev. Dr. Ben King, to Saint Andrew’s. Dr. King, whose scholarly work focuses on the Oxford Movement and Anglo-Catholicism, currently serves as Academic Dean and Professor of Church History at the Seminary of the Southwest and is a friend and mentor to Fr. Gary. Dr. King previously preached at Saint Andrew’s on the occasion of Fr. Gary’s installation as rector in December of 2016. On Saturday, September 6, at 5:30 PM, we will gather in the Parish Hall for dinner followed by Dr. King’s talk on “What was the Oxford Movement and why does it matter?” Then, on Sunday, September 7, Dr. King will be our preacher at both of our Sunday masses. We will be sharing more details for those who would like to register for the dinner and talk—and hope that you will plan to be with us as we welcome Dr. King back to Saint Andrew’s.

UPDATED: Parking at Saint Andrew's
For detailed parking instructions, click here.
***PLEASE NOTE - West End Baptist Church, which owns the parking lot around Saint Andrew's, has reduced the parking lot area available on Sundays to the area closer to South Main Street--with the back part of the parking lot (against Rhett Street) no longer available. As a result, please enter the parking lot via South Main Street. The map linked below has been updated to reflect that change.***
|
Note: You need a parking decal to park in the designated lots. They can be found on the shelf to the left of the doors as you exit the church.
| Sunday Altar Flower and Presence Candle Dedications |
On Sundays, we have the opportunity to offer a special dedication of the altar flowers or presence candle in honor, memory, or celebration of loved ones. The cost to the church for altar flowers is now $100 per Sunday, so we are suggesting that donations for dedicating altar flowers be in the range of $50 to $100 to help us cover those costs. The suggested donation for a presence candle dedication is $10.
If you would like to sign up for a Sunday, please see the sign up sheet on the bulletin in the Parish Hall or click on the button below. You may place a check in the offering plate with "Altar Flowers" or "Presence Candle" noted in the memo.
We will continue to only have Altar Flowers if someone has signed up and paid for the arrangements. As a result, we will need to know by the Tuesday prior to the upcoming Sunday if you would like to sign up.

Notes Along the Way | Grace | But the call to be grace is life-changing and profoundly challenging. Many people want the grace and blessings, but they turn away when called to become the grace they long for. In John's Gospel, when faced with the difficult words of Jesus, many from the crowd left him, but Simon Peter spoke for the faithful disciples when he said, "Lord, to whom shall we go?
We are officially in Back to School season! Through our Cooking for Kids program, we're feeding hundreds of children every weekday by providing meals and snacks to community centers across the city. Choir | Rehearsal on Sundays at 9:30 AM
We are always seeking additional volunteers for the Saint Andrew’s choir, which currently gathers on Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM (and not on Wednesday evenings) to prepare the music for the 10:30 mass. This more limited time commitment provides an excellent opportunity for prospective new members to “try us out.” If you have questions, contact the Parish Office—or just show up on Sunday morning!
