Called to Worship. Sent to Witness. Led to Welcome.

Bernard of Clairvaux
This Wednesday at our Healing mass we celebrated the life and legacy of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, a Cistercian monastic from twelfth century France. Bernard’s life and legacy are astounding– in addition to his brilliant preaching and widely popular devotional works, Bernard’s ministry led to the founding of sixty new abbeys.
Yet Bernard’s journey to realizing this call was not an easy one; he received significant pushback from his family while pursuing his call. But even as his parents were hesitant to accept it, Bernard’s witness to the good news of Jesus was so compelling that upon first joining the monastery in Citeaux he brought along four of his biological brothers and about twenty-six friends. The Holy Spirit’s presence in Bernard was undeniable to those who knew him, to those who heard him preach, and to those who read his letters.
On August 20, 1153, Bernard died. And it is in the wake of such a loss that one wonders how communities go on without such a leader. Bernard modeled faithful discipleship and rigorous discipline, perhaps even to a fault; he was known to often neglect sleep and his own needs for the sake of writing letters and sermons to inspire, encourage, and challenge. This week my mind has often wandered to the many monastics who followed Bernard to the Abbey, and especially those who continued to pray and work (ora et labora, motto of the Benedictine Order) after Bernard died.
When a beloved sister or brother in the faith goes on to glory, our heartbreak is often accompanied by listlessness and despair. Having known another who had worked so tirelessly for Jesus’ sake, we wonder if our own courage and strength will be enough to carry on. But this is where our trust in the Holy Spirit and the communion of saints is most needed. Saints like Bernard are faithful ones who have broken open our expectations and have expanded our imaginations for what is possible. These lights of Christ are gifted to us in every generation, and upon their passing, our task is to once again offer ourselves as a living sacrifice to God (Romans 12:1). This week, I invite you to renew this prayer. Ask God what he would have you do to continue the good work of the saints like Bernard in our time and in our community. For perhaps you are the one we have been waiting for, to help all of us imagine anew how we might take up the cross and follow Jesus.
Pax et bonum,
Mother Molly+

2026-2027 Children and Youth Forms
Updated children and youth forms for the 2026-2027 school year are available. Any child or youth who plans to participate in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd or any children or youth activities this fall will need an updated form. Physical copies are also available outside the Atrium.
| | | Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for 3-to-9-Year- Olds | Starting Back on Sunday, September 13 | 9:30 AM | The Atrium (upstairs in the Parish Hall)
We are delighted to be embarking on our second full academic year of offering Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to some of our youngest parishioners. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an approach to Christian formation that builds upon Montessori methods of learning — starting with a fundamental awareness that a deep bond between God and each child already exists. This relationship produces a desire to draw ever closer to God. Within Catechesis, we seek to nourish and encourage this desire for deeper relationship—drawing forth joy and wonder in the child (and in the adults who get to be a part of this good work!). If you have any questions, feel free to speak with Laura Rhodes or Cheryl Banks, who serve as our lead catechists.

UPDATED: Parking at Saint Andrew's
For detailed parking instructions, click here.
***PLEASE NOTE - West End Baptist Church, which owns the parking lot around Saint Andrew's, has reduced the parking lot area available on Sundays to the area closer to South Main Street--with the back part of the parking lot (against Rhett Street) no longer available. As a result, please enter the parking lot via South Main Street. The map linked below has been updated to reflect that change.***

Note: You need a parking decal to park in the designated lots. They can be found on the shelf to the left of the doors as you exit the church.
| Sunday Altar Flower and Presence Candle Dedications | |
On Sundays, we have the opportunity to offer a special dedication of the altar flowers or presence candle in honor, memory, or celebration of loved ones. The cost to the church for altar flowers is now $100 per Sunday, so we are suggesting that donations for dedicating altar flowers be in the range of $50 to $100 to help us cover those costs. The suggested donation for a presence candle dedication is $10.
If you would like to sign up for a Sunday, please see the sign up sheet on the bulletin in the Parish Hall or click on the button below. You may place a check in the offering plate with "Altar Flowers" or "Presence Candle" noted in the memo.
We will continue to only have Altar Flowers if someone has signed up and paid for the arrangements. As a result, we will need to know by the Tuesday prior to the upcoming Sunday if you would like to sign up.
