Called to Worship. Sent to Witness. Led to Welcome.

An Invitation from the Rector

Next Saturday, Come Learn More About Our History as a Church within the Anglo-Catholic Tradition from My Friend & Mentor, The Rev. Dr. Ben King

Dr. Ben King preaching at the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, Oxford, in the very same pulpit from which, in 1833, Rev. John Keble preached the sermon that is widely credited with beginning the Oxford Movement.

As some of you may know, the Oxford Movement is the name that historians have given to a movement within the Church of England starting in the early 1800s that sought a return to more ancient understandings of our faith and worship -- to reclaim more fundamental groundings of how the church was structured and governed. This movement, which reasserted the apostolic and catholic heritage within the Anglican tradition, has had deep and lasting influence on the Church of England, the Episcopal Church, and the worldwide Anglican Communion -- especially those churches that, like Saint Andrew's, identify as Anglo-Catholic.

Back in 2013, when I started my year of Anglican studies at Sewanee as part of my ordination process, one of the first classes that I took was titled, "The Oxford Movement, the Liturgy, and the Crisis of Faith," and was taught by The Reverend Dr. Ben King. I soon learned that Dr. King, in addition to being a great scholar and teacher, was also my new next-door neighbor in Sewanee! Ultimately, therefore, over the course of that year, I was blessed to be able to count Dr. King not only as a teacher and mentor, but also as a neighbor and friend. When our youngest daughter, Eliza, was baptized at the Easter Vigil in All Saints Chapel later that year, Dr. King and his wife, Leyla, who is also a priest and a scholar, were among the godparents.

Based on these histories, I was delighted that, soon after I became rector of Saint Andrew's, Dr. King agreed to come and preach at my installation service as rector in December 2016. Below is an image of Dr. King delivering the message on that memorable evening.

With all of that in mind, I am looking forward to welcoming Dr. King back to Saint Andrew's next week, as part of our 125th Anniversary Year celebration. In addition to preaching on Sunday, September 7, we have the opportunity, on the evening prior, to hear from Dr. King, one of the world's leading scholars on the Oxford Movement, about the ongoing significance of this movement. I hope that you will plan to take advantage of this incredible opportunity by joining us on Saturday, September 6, at 5:30 PM in the Parish Hall as we gather for dinner followed by Dr. King’s lecture on “What was the Oxford Movement and why does it matter?” If you have not done so already, below is a link where you can register:

I look forward to seeing you there!

Grace & Peace,

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for 3-to-9-Year- Olds | Starting Back on Sunday, September 7 | 9:30 AM | The Atrium (upstairs in the Parish Hall) |

We are delighted to be embarking on our second full academic year of offering Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to some of our youngest parishioners.

For those who have not experienced it yet, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an approach to Christian formation that builds upon Montessori methods of learning — starting with a fundamental awareness that a deep bond between God and each child already exists, and this relationship produces, in the child, a desire to draw ever closer to God. With Catechesis, we seek to nourish and encourage that desire for deeper relationship—drawing forth both joy and wonder in the child (and in the adults who get to be a part of this good work!).

If you have any questions, feel free to speak with Fr. Gary or Cheryl Banks, who will continue to serve as our lead catechists this year. More details will go out via e-mail to parents next week.

UPDATED: Parking at Saint Andrew's

For detailed parking instructions, click here.

***PLEASE NOTE - West End Baptist Church, which owns the parking lot around Saint Andrew's, has reduced the parking lot area available on Sundays to the area closer to South Main Street--with the back part of the parking lot (against Rhett Street) no longer available. As a result, please enter the parking lot via South Main Street. The map linked below has been updated to reflect that change.***

Note: You need a parking decal to park in the designated lots. They can be found on the shelf to the left of the doors as you exit the church.

Sunday Altar Flower and Presence Candle Dedications

On Sundays, we have the opportunity to offer a special dedication of the altar flowers or presence candle in honor, memory, or celebration of loved ones. The cost to the church for altar flowers is now $100 per Sunday, so we are suggesting that donations for dedicating altar flowers be in the range of $50 to $100 to help us cover those costs. The suggested donation for a presence candle dedication is $10.

If you would like to sign up for a Sunday, please see the sign up sheet on the bulletin in the Parish Hall or click on the button below. You may place a check in the offering plate with "Altar Flowers" or "Presence Candle" noted in the memo.

We will continue to only have Altar Flowers if someone has signed up and paid for the arrangements. As a result, we will need to know by the Tuesday prior to the upcoming Sunday if you would like to sign up.

Notes Along the Way | Unpossessed

When Ben (not his real name) came to tell me about it, he confessed that he had assaulted both another protester and a police officer and vandalized something I no longer recall. He had done it and was convinced he was right both about the issue and the violence, despite also knowing that he was against violence.

Service Opportunities

Choir | Rehearsal on Sundays at 9:30 AM

We are always seeking additional volunteers for the Saint Andrew’s choir, which currently gathers on Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM (and not on Wednesday evenings) to prepare the music for the 10:30 mass. This more limited time commitment provides an excellent opportunity for prospective new members to “try us out.” If you have questions, contact the Parish Office—or just show up on Sunday morning!

Volunteers Needed
