Called to Worship. Sent to Witness. Led to Welcome.

From the Rector

Thanks to Michael Whittington for sharing this picture that he took of Saint Andrew's last Sunday -- and for reporting back that there was no evidence of damage from the evening's ice storm.

Preparing Again ...

Here we are again! It is Thursday afternoon, and we are once again wondering whether we will be able to gather in the church for worship on Sunday. And, once again, I continue to hope that the weather will not prevent us from offering the mass on Sunday. Please know that, though we will continue to prepare for our regular worship, we will also let folks know if anything changes about those plans.

With respect to our plans, I wanted to share a couple of notes:

  • Low Mass to Celebrate the Feast of Saint Charles, King & Martyr, Tomorrow (January 30) at Noon – If you are interested to learn more about why King Charles I of England is remembered as a saint by some in the Anglican tradition or are a regular observer of his feast day or are just worried about not otherwise being able to attend mass this weekend, I hope that you will plant to join us in the church tomorrow at noon – before the next winter storm is forecast to arrive.

  • Weather-Permitting, Canon Rhoades to Preside at This Sunday’s Masses at Saint Andrew’s - In light of the significant role that Christ Church has played in the formation and history of Saint Andrew’s, I recently accepted Bishop Richards’ request for local Episcopal clergy to assist on one Sunday at Christ Church as they prepare to call an Interim Rector. Earlier this week, I learned that my guest visit had been scheduled for this coming Sunday! Thus, if weather permits, I will be preaching and presiding at the 10:30 Mass at Christ Church this Sunday — while also leading a forum there to share more about the interwoven histories of Saint Andrew’s and Christ Church. As part of the Bishop’s arrangement, Canon Stephen Rhoades, who serves on the diocesan staff as Canon to the Ordinary, is planning to preside at both masses here on Sunday. However, there is now a good chance that the weather will confound these plans. Either way, we will keep you updated.

In the meantime, please continue to seek opportunities, through prayerful action, to provide for and care for those who are most vulnerable in the midst of this severe weather.

Grace & Peace,

Fr. Gary+

UPDATED: Parking at Saint Andrew's

For detailed parking instructions, click here.

***PLEASE NOTE - West End Baptist Church, which owns the parking lot around Saint Andrew's, has reduced the parking lot area available on Sundays to the area closer to South Main Street--with the back part of the parking lot (against Rhett Street) no longer available. As a result, please enter the parking lot via South Main Street. The map linked below has been updated to reflect that change.***

Note: You need a parking decal to park in the designated lots. They can be found on the shelf to the left of the doors as you exit the church.

Sunday Altar Flower and Presence Candle Dedications

On Sundays, we have the opportunity to offer a special dedication of the altar flowers or presence candle in honor, memory, or celebration of loved ones. The cost to the church for altar flowers is now $100 per Sunday, so we are suggesting that donations for dedicating altar flowers be in the range of $50 to $100 to help us cover those costs. The suggested donation for a presence candle dedication is $10.

If you would like to sign up for a Sunday, please see the sign up sheet on the bulletin in the Parish Hall or click on the button below. You may place a check in the offering plate with "Altar Flowers" or "Presence Candle" noted in the memo.

We will continue to only have Altar Flowers if someone has signed up and paid for the arrangements. As a result, we will need to know by the Tuesday prior to the upcoming Sunday if you would like to sign up.

Notes Along the Way | The Lamb of God

One of my liturgical nitpicks is the unreflective addition of the Lamb of God, you take away..." to every single Eucharist, regardless of season. Good rule here: Simple is better. You do not have to have it. You could even have silence. There are wonderful choices in the Hymnal if you just cannot handle the quiet.

Service Opportunities

Altar Guild Volunteers Needed

The Altar Guild is currently looking for people who may be interested in serving with them. If you are interested, or have questions, please reach out to Lesley Moore or Linda Fitzsimmons.

Choir | Rehearsal on Sundays at 9:30 AM

We are always seeking additional volunteers for the Saint Andrew’s choir, which currently gathers on Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM (and not on Wednesday evenings) to prepare the music for the 10:30 mass. This more limited time commitment provides an excellent opportunity for prospective new members to “try us out.” If you have questions, contact the Parish Office—or just show up on Sunday morning!

Volunteers Needed

Feed Thy Neighbor

Founded in 2010, Feed Thy Neighbor is a cooperative effort of the Episcopal community in Greenville. Parish volunteers from Saint Andrew’s, St. Peter’s, St. James, and Christ Church feed the hungry each Saturday from 7:30 to 8:30 AM. We are seeking volunteers to help serve and clean up. Please contact the office if you would like to volunteer: office@standrewsgreenville.org.
