State Historic Board Provides State-Level Approval
for Saint Andrew's Application for Our Church Building
to be on the National Historic Registry!
| | Saint Andrew's representatives at last Friday's State Historic Board Hearing (from left to right): Staci Richey (our consultant), Fr. Tyler, Steve Fairley, Laura Rhodes, Jim King, and Annette Geraghty | | |
Last Friday, I was able to attend the State Historic Board’s meeting at which Saint Andrew’s was taken into consideration for historic designation status. The meeting was held at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History in Columbia. Four of our parishioners (pictured above) were also in attendance to support this effort.
We were the second property on the agenda. The first was also a church, Hebron Zion Presbyterian Church of John’s Island, South Carolina. After a presentation about the building’s historical significance to the local community (built by formerly enslaved carpenters out of shipwreck lumber in 1868!), the current pastor and two elders gave a word of thanks for the preservation efforts and the board voted unanimously to pass them on to the Department of the Interior for National Registry consideration.
Our historic preservation consultant, Staci Richey, gave a presentation on Saint Andrew’s, a much abridged version of the presentation she gave at our Wednesday night formation class back in February. Highlighted features were the building as an example of small gothic revival architecture, as well our unique brickwork on the gables usually seen in the wood of carpenter gothic churches. Also of note were the audible “oohs” and “ahhs” in the room as pictures of our building’s lovely interior were displayed.
When asked if those present from Saint Andrew’s would like to say anything, I took the opportunity to thank Staci for her work and the board for taking us into consideration. I said that Greenville, always the forward looking city, had lost a significant amount of its architectural heritage to development over the years, and that I think it would prove valuable to the wider community to preserve, in this rapidly developing neighborhood of a growing city, a structure built with beauty, and not simply utility, in mind. I said that Saint Andrew’s has served as a welcoming place of rest and contemplation for generations, and that I foresee it continuing to be such a place for generations to come.
The board then voted unanimously to recommend us to the National Registry for designated status consideration. According to Staci Richey, we should hear back about final approval from the National Park Service within 2 to 3 months -- so we are hopeful that this can be one more reason for celebration during our 125th Anniversary Year!

125th Anniversary Guest Preaching Series
Continues Sunday with Canon Mia McDowell
This Sunday, we welcome Canon Mia McDowell back to Saint Andrew’s as our guest preacher and celebrant. Canon McDowell was previously a Saint Andrew’s parishioner, and served actively in numerous ministries (including Altar Guild and DOK). After she experienced a call to ordained ministry, Canon McDowell was supported by Saint Andrew’s in her discernment process and as seminarian at Sewanee. Canon McDowell now serves as Canon Catechist at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Columbia.

Laetare Sunday | This Sunday
The Fourth Sunday of Lent is also known as Laetare Sunday or Rose Sunday – one of the two Sundays of the church year (along with the Third Sunday of Advent) when we use rose-colored vestments for the mass. The joyful theme of Laetare Sunday and the corresponding change in vestments provide a brief lightening of certain penitential aspects of our worship in Lent – as we begin to anticipate the joyful victory that we will celebrate at the close of Lent.

This year during the season of Lent, Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church Women (ECW) are inviting our Parish to engage in the practice of gratitude and in turn, change the world through the United Thank Offering (UTO).
Beginning in 1883, the women of the church took up a thank offering to support innovative mission and ministry in The Episcopal Church that the church budget could not cover. UTO’s focus is still on promoting gratitude and supporting innovative projects that address compelling needs around the globe, focusing on urgent human needs – meaning your individual gratitude gift helps with racial reconciliation efforts, ending poverty, and much more!
We encourage you to adopt the practice of gratitude during the season of Lent this year. While there are so many things happening in our world that are disheartening, there is still much to be grateful for!
Using the resources provided:
-
NOTICE good things each day,
-
GIVE thanks to God for your blessings,
-
MAKE an offering for each blessing,
-
BLESS others!
A gratitude guide book plus an envelope and/or box for donation are in the basket located in the back of the church. Please consider making an offering to help the work of UTO as part of your practice of gratitude during this season of Lent.
The UTO Lenten Gratitude offering will be collected on Palm Sunday, April 13. We are pleased to share that 100% of all funds given to UTO support innovative mission and ministry in the Episcopal Church!

Clergy-Led Bible Study of the Book of Genesis
Tuesdays | 4 PM
Through the Book of Genesis, we receive many of the foundational stories of our faith, which shape our understanding of God’s relationship to creation and to God’s creatures — and, in particular, how God has called a particular people, the Jewish people, to a distinct role in the revelation of God’s plan for creation. We hope that you will join us as we continue to study the Book of Genesis together.

As we continue the journey of Lent, we are also preparing for our next baptismal feast, which will take place on Saturday, April 19, when Lent draws to a close as we celebrate the Great Vigil of Easter -- one of the four feast days that our prayer book designates as “especially appropriate” for Holy Baptism. We have several individuals who are already preparing for baptism. However, if there is anyone else desiring to be baptized or to have a child baptized, please let one of our priests know so that we can begin to prepare accordingly.

UPDATED: Parking at Saint Andrew's
For detailed parking instructions, click here.
***PLEASE NOTE - West End Baptist Church, which owns the parking lot around Saint Andrew's, has reduced the parking lot area available on Sundays to the area closer to South Main Street--with the back part of the parking lot (against Rhett Street) no longer available. As a result, please enter the parking lot via South Main Street. The map linked below has been updated to reflect that change.***
| |
Note: You need a parking decal to park in the designated lots. They can be found on the shelf to the left of the doors as you exit the church.
| Sunday Altar Flower and Presence Candle Dedications | |
On Sundays, we have the opportunity to offer a special dedication of the altar flowers or presence candle in honor, memory, or celebration of loved ones. (Please note that, during Lent, we only place flowers on the altar on Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday in Lent, which falls on March 30 this year.) The cost to the church for altar flowers is now $100 per Sunday, so we are suggesting that donations for dedicating altar flowers be in the range of $50 to $100 to help us cover those costs. The suggested donation for a presence candle dedication is $10.
If you would like to sign up for a Sunday, please see the sign up sheet on the bulletin in the Parish Hall or click on the button below. You may place a check in the offering plate with "Altar Flowers" or "Presence Candle" noted in the memo.
We will continue to only have Altar Flowers if someone has signed up and paid for the arrangements. As a result, we will need to know by the Tuesday prior to the upcoming Sunday if you would like to sign up.
