From the Associate Rector

Suscipe

A Prayer of Discernment for the Annual Pledge Campaign

Take, Lord, and receive

All my liberty, my memory, my understanding,

and my entire will,

All that I have and call my own.

You have given all to me.

To you, Lord, I return it.

Everything is yours; do with it what you will.

Give me only your love and your grace,

That is enough for me.

Amen.

The prayer printed above, known as the Suscipe, is from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. As a sixteenth century Christian theologian and mystic, St. Ignatius of Loyola helped the contemplative tradition of prayer to firmly root in Christian spirituality. Like many other saints, his conversion was dramatic. After suffering a terrible wound in battle, the patience and stillness required to recover offered Ignatius the opportunity to unflinchingly examine his life. This setback ultimately set him on the path of conversion after reading the life of Jesus. The radical and transformative love of Christ, and the holy lives inspired by his Gospel, led Ignatius to fully dedicate his life to God and to help others do the same.

I discovered this particular prayer of self-offering from Ignatius' Spiritual Exercises three years ago, and have found it to be wonderfully helpful in resetting my frame of belonging: to know my belonging to God first and foremost, and to know that all things I hold and call my own are ultimately gifts from God. Gifts of understanding, of generosity of spirit, of fortitude to face hardship with courage, all come from God; our role is to cultivate and tend these habits to grow into fulness for the sake of the Gospel.

As we enter the third week of our pledge campaign, I offer Ignatius' words as you prayerfully consider how God is calling you to share the gifts entrusted to your care. From making coffee to share after worship and weeding the churchyard, to handing out bulletins and reading the prayers, to wiping down tables and greeting guests at Saturday's Feed Thy Neighbor ministry, your contributions make this community vibrant with the love of God and neighbor. It is your contributions of time, prayer, and leadership, that make our worship, our mission, and our outreach to neighbors in need possible. All of these things gesture to our most important offering: the offering of our selves, our souls and bodies, to God, to whom we have always belonged.

If you have found Saint Andrew’s to be a place of spiritual awakening, a place reflecting the splendor of God's presence, and a place embodying service to the kingdom of Heaven, consider how God might be calling you to offer your time and treasure to this good work.

Pax et bonum,

Mother Molly+

October Youth Group Gathering | This Sunday | 5 - 7 PM | Parish Hall

Here at Saint Andrew’s, we share in the unique splendor of Anglo-Catholic worship. But have you ever wondered why we use incense in worship? Or considered the meaning of the white robes and colorful vestments in worship? On October 25, you are invited to join our monthly youth gathering as we explore together the history and spirituality of key parts of our worship, from prayers addressing Saint Mary, to making the sign of the cross before receiving communion. After eating dinner in the Parish House, we will gather in the sanctuary to explore these practices of our community. Email formation@standrewsgreenville.org to RSVP.

Change of Date: Monthly Book Club | November 8 | 12:30 PM

Monthly Book Club has been moved to Sunday, November 8. It will take place at Kay Friddle's house (4 Phillips Trail, Greenville) after coffee hour 12:30. We are reading Life A Love Story by Elizabeth Byrd.

All Saints Sunday with Bishop’s Visitation | Service of Baptism & Confirmation | November 1 | 10:30 AM Mass

On Sunday, November 1, we will celebrate the Feast of All Saints at both masses, and our diocesan Bishop, The Rt. Rev. Daniel Richards, will be with us for the 10:30 AM Mass, which will include baptisms, confirmations, receptions, and reaffirmations. There will also be a special coffee hour reception in the Parish Hall following the 10:30 AM Mass. We have a number of individuals preparing to receive the sacraments of baptism and confirmation—as well as others preparing to be received or to reaffirm their baptismal vows before the Bishop. If anyone else is interested in reaffirmation who has not yet let us know, please let Fr. Gary or Mtr. Molly know so that we can plan accordingly.

All Souls Day Requiem Mass | Monday, November 2 | 12 PM

We will celebrate the Feast of All Souls with Remembrance of the Faithful Departed. Please add the names of those who have died that you wish to remember. You may submit names by writing them in The Book of Remembrance that will be in the narthex in the coming weeks, or by submitting them online.

Feast of Saint Andrew | Sunday, November 15 | Parish Annual Meeting with Potluck Lunch | Parish Hall | Noon

We will celebrate the Feast of Saint Andrew at both masses and then hold our Parish Annual Meeting with Potluck Lunch (meat provided, please plan to bring sides and desserts). Following lunch, we will review the accomplishments of the past year, plan for the upcoming year, and elect new vestry members and a diocesan convention delegate. Please see information regarding nominees below.

Nominations for Vestry & Diocesan Delegate

As we prepare for our Parish Annual Meeting on Sunday, November 15, please prayerfully consider who might offer leadership in the following positions:

  • 3 Vestry positions for full 3 year terms;
  • 1 Diocesan Convention Delegate for 4 year term;

Our outgoing vestry members, Leigh Randall, Annette Geraghty, and Linda Fitzsimmons, constitute the Nominating Committee – so please advise them of any suggestions.

Qualifications for Vestry: Under our parish by-laws, to be considered for the Vestry, an individual must be a confirmed adult member of the congregation and make a financial pledge for the next calendar year. Also, an outgoing vestry member who has served a full term is not eligible for one year following the completion of that term, and only one member of a household may serve at any given time. Under diocesan guidelines, members of the Vestry are also required to maintain up-to-date Safe Church training and submit to a diocesan background check.

Qualifications for Convention Delegate: Under our parish by-laws, to be considered for Diocesan Convention Delegate, an individual must be a confirmed adult member of the congregation. In addition, an outgoing delegate who has served a full term is not eligible to serve as delegate for one year following the completion of that term.

A Note on Parish Name Tags

If do not have a name tag, have misplaced yours, or need something changed, or if you requested a name tag previously but have not seen it on the board, please let email Frances Twomey, our Director of Communications.

Thank you for helping us build a more connected and hospitable parish!

Coffee Hour

Volunteers Needed!

Please consider volunteering to assist with refreshments and set up for our coffee hour fellowship following the 10:30 AM Mass. A sign up sheet can be found on the “Welcome” bulletin board in the Parish Hall or online at the link below.

UPDATED: Parking at Saint Andrew's

For detailed parking instructions, click here.

***PLEASE NOTE - West End Baptist Church, which owns the parking lot around Saint Andrew's, has reduced the parking lot area available on Sundays to the area closer to South Main Street--with the back part of the parking lot (against Rhett Street) no longer available. As a result, please enter the parking lot via South Main Street. The map linked below has been updated to reflect that change.***

Note: You need a parking decal to park in the designated lots. They can be found on the shelf to the left of the doors as you exit the church.

Sunday Altar Flower and Presence Candle Dedications

On Sundays, we have the opportunity to offer a special dedication of the altar flowers or presence candle in honor, memory, or celebration of loved ones. The cost to the church for altar flowers is now $100 per Sunday, so we are suggesting that donations for dedicating altar flowers be in the range of $50 to $100 to help us cover those costs. The suggested donation for a presence candle dedication is $10.

If you would like to sign up for a Sunday, please see the sign up sheet on the bulletin in the Parish Hall or click on the button below. You may place a check in the offering plate with "Altar Flowers" or "Presence Candle" noted in the memo.

We will continue to only have Altar Flowers if someone has signed up and paid for the arrangements. As a result, we will need to know by the Tuesday prior to the upcoming Sunday if you would like to sign up.

Volunteer Spotlight: September Build Teams

The Clear Mountain Properties team traded their usual workday for tool belts and drills to build a new deck for a local homeowner, creating safer, more stable access to the home. By supporting the project financially and through hands-on service, their team brought their belief that housing is the foundation for stability and well-being to life.
