Making & Empowering Disciples:

Come & See the Church Grow

At the end of Matthew’s Gospel, the resurrected Jesus tells his disciples to “go and make new disciples … baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:10). Later, on the Day of Pentecost, as recorded in the Book of Acts, the disciples received the Holy Spirit, shared the Good News on the streets of Jerusalem, and over three thousand who welcomed the message were baptized. Then, those who constituted that growing community, the early Church, “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers” (Acts 2:42).

This Sunday, as we continue to answer that call to make and empower disciples, you are invited to come and see the Church grow. Because, as Bishop Richards comes for his regular visitation (which generally happens once every two years) and, this time, celebrates All Saints Day with us, we will be adding to the company of the saints—as four individuals of varying ages are preparing to be baptized at our 10:30 AM Mass. At the same service, the Bishop will also confirm 17 other individuals (plus two of the newly baptized adults), receive 4 others, and reaffirm 4 others. It promises to be a glorious day in the life Saint Andrew’s – as well as in the life of the Church Universal.

And, given all the parishioners, families, and friends who will seek to share in this joyous occasion, we expect that our historic church building will be full for the 10:30 Mass—and, as a result, we are planning to provide for overflow in the Parish Hall, where the service will be streamed (and communion made available).

Of course, given the crowd (of not quite three thousand) that will be gathering to see all of this at the 10:30 Mass, you may consider coming to the 8:30 AM Mass instead, where I am confident that you will also have an opportunity to see the church growing – as the average attendance at that service has more than doubled in recent years. I also imagine that the numbers at the 8:30 Mass on this particular Sunday will be increased further by some who regularly attend the 10:30 Mass. And, given that it is All Saints Day, the 8:30 AM Mass will have hymns—so any 10:30 regulars won’t miss out on getting to sing if they do decide to worship earlier.

Once it is all done, with our newly-baptized, confirmed, received, and reaffirmed companions in the journey, we will continue to devote ourselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

Grace & Peace,

Fr. Gary+

UPDATED: Parking at Saint Andrew's

For detailed parking instructions, click here.

***PLEASE NOTE - West End Baptist Church, which owns the parking lot around Saint Andrew's, has reduced the parking lot area available on Sundays to the area closer to South Main Street--with the back part of the parking lot (against Rhett Street) no longer available. As a result, please enter the parking lot via South Main Street. The map linked below has been updated to reflect that change.***

Note: You need a parking decal to park in the designated lots. They can be found on the shelf to the left of the doors as you exit the church.

Sunday Altar Flower and Presence Candle Dedications

On Sundays, we have the opportunity to offer a special dedication of the altar flowers or presence candle in honor, memory, or celebration of loved ones. The cost to the church for altar flowers is now $100 per Sunday, so we are suggesting that donations for dedicating altar flowers be in the range of $50 to $100 to help us cover those costs. The suggested donation for a presence candle dedication is $10.

If you would like to sign up for a Sunday, please see the sign up sheet on the bulletin in the Parish Hall or click on the button below. You may place a check in the offering plate with "Altar Flowers" or "Presence Candle" noted in the memo.

We will continue to only have Altar Flowers if someone has signed up and paid for the arrangements. As a result, we will need to know by the Tuesday prior to the upcoming Sunday if you would like to sign up.
