From the Rector

Returning with Gratitude

Fr. Gary crossing the two-mile stretch of sand and mudflats known as the the Pilgrim's Way as he concluded his 65-mile pilgrimage along St. Cuthbert's Way to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in late June.

Thank you for the many opportunities for rest, reflection, rejuvenation, and fun that were the four months of my recent sabbatical. I have been back from sabbatical for just over two weeks now, and I am grateful to be reorienting my life to the regular rhythms of parish ministry – specifically, parish ministry as uniquely embodied at Saint Andrew’s.

As I returned from this time away, I am very aware of the many blessings that we share at Saint Andrew’s.  We have, for many years, been blessed with extraordinary servant leaders on our vestry, our altar guild, lay ministers, choir, garden crew, nursery, children and youth ministry, mission and outreach, pastoral care, hospitality, and numerous other ministries. There is not enough room in this newsletter to thank all of the people who continuously make sure that the ministry of Saint Andrew’s continues unabated.

But I do want to name just few people whose service during my sabbatical is worthy of special recognition (though there are many more): our Associate Rector, Mtr. Molly McGee Short; our Senior Warden, Leigh Randall; our Treasurer, Jamie Hinds; our Interim Organist-Choirmaster, Leslie Boyette; and our Director of Communications, Frances Twomey. Each of these individuals played a critical role in supporting and furthering the mission and ministry of Saint Andrew’s during my time away. We are all blessed by their gifts and their faithfulness. I hope that you will join me in letting them know how much we recognize and are grateful for their leadership.

In the weeks ahead, I look forward to sharing with you more about the experiences and insight that I bring back from my four-month sabbatical. But, for now, I just wanted you all to know that my cup overflows with gratitude.

Grace & Peace,

Fr. Gary+

P.S. Speaking of an abundance of gratitude, we are very excited to be able to announce the hire of a new Parish Administrator, Kevin Mertens, who started this past Monday! More details can be found in the Announcement section below.

We are delighted to be able to announce that, this week, Kevin Mertens started as our new Parish Administrator. For the past seven years, Kevin served as Director of Faith in Action at Christ Church, and, earlier this year, Kevin was ordained to the vocational diaconate in the Episcopal Church. Following Kevin's ordination, Bishop Richards assigned Kevin to serve as part-time Deacon at Church of the Redeemer. We are grateful that Kevin has decided to offer his deep gifts and experience in church administration to Saint Andrew’s as our new part-time Parish Administrator. With the hiring of Kevin, we are reestablishing our standard Parish Office Hours of Monday-Friday, 9:30 AM to 2 PM. To contact the office, you will continue to email office@standrewsgreenville.org and call our Parish Office number (864-235-5884).

UPDATED: Parking at Saint Andrew's

For detailed parking instructions, click here.

***PLEASE NOTE - West End Baptist Church, which owns the parking lot around Saint Andrew's, has reduced the parking lot area available on Sundays to the area closer to South Main Street--with the back part of the parking lot (against Rhett Street) no longer available. As a result, please enter the parking lot via South Main Street. The map linked below has been updated to reflect that change.***

Note: You need a parking decal to park in the designated lots. They can be found on the shelf to the left of the doors as you exit the church.

Sunday Altar Flower and Presence Candle Dedications

On Sundays, we have the opportunity to offer a special dedication of the altar flowers or presence candle in honor, memory, or celebration of loved ones. The cost to the church for altar flowers is now $100 per Sunday, so we are suggesting that donations for dedicating altar flowers be in the range of $50 to $100 to help us cover those costs. The suggested donation for a presence candle dedication is $10.

If you would like to sign up for a Sunday, please see the sign up sheet on the bulletin in the Parish Hall or click on the button below. You may place a check in the offering plate with "Altar Flowers" or "Presence Candle" noted in the memo.

We will continue to only have Altar Flowers if someone has signed up and paid for the arrangements. As a result, we will need to know by the Tuesday prior to the upcoming Sunday if you would like to sign up.
