Reparations in Buncombe County/Asheville
Dwight Mullen, PhD
Dr. Dwight Mullen, retired professor from UNC Asheville, will discuss the goals, accomplishments, and timeline of the Asheville-Buncombe Community Reparations Commission. The Commission consists of approximately two dozen Black residents of Asheville and Buncombe County and focuses on both the historical injustices of discrimination (urban renewal, red-lining, private and public discrimination, etc.) as well as conditions and policies that, by design or inadvertently, continue to further disparities in job opportunities, education, income and wealth, and access to power.
Dr. Mullen taught courses in public policy, American politics, and African and African American politics at UNC Asheville, as well as serving as the chair of the Political Science department there. He has chaired panels and presented papers at the National Conference of Black Political Scientists; overseen research projects on the State of Black Asheville; and dedicated much of his professional and personal time to improving the delivery of public services to underserved populations.

Homecomings

Humble or grand, home is where your heart belongs. When it is a place of shelter and love, there is no place like home. It is then, one of the sweetest words in any language. It suggests a nest where intimacy and belonging can foster identity and individuality. UU congregations celebrate "Homecoming" during the month of September to welcome folks back after the summer. We will also have our Water Communion service this Sunday as well.
REMINDER: Please bring your water from your travels and/or staycation on Sunday, September 17, 2023.

Black Mountain Park Survey
Deadline - September 15, 2023
Our greenways advocacy group, Black Mountain Greenways & Trails Committee, has along with Parks & Recreation and the National Park Service been conducting a survey. The data from this survey will be used by the Town to develop a Master Plan for two properties.
The survey is gathering data for the donated properties from Mary Hemphill in 2017 and Black Mountain Ventures Company in 2022. Hemphill property is deeded to become a park. It is 25 acres with a steep ridge, wooded heavily and bowl shaped. The Venture’s property is 26 acres, floodplain and plateau that will be considered for multiple uses. Our concern is only for recreation.
The survey was developed from input during a public outreach meeting in May. Please spread the word to your congregation and ask them to fill out this online survey by September 15, 2023.

Book Club Discussion

This is the 1st of 2 meetings to discuss David Lamotte's new book, "You Are Changing the World, whether you like it or not." You can purchase the book directly from David's website, at local bookstores, or from bookshop.org
(which supports local bookstores). We will have a 2nd meeting towards the end of September arranged by those who have expressed interest in coming up with a UU group action plan using the book as a guide.

Effective Communication Strategies for Dementia Caregivers

Many of us know someone who has been diagnosed with dementia. Please contact Anna (740) 706-3793 / [email protected] if you are interested in carpooling from Black Mountain or Swannanoa to attend this important presentation at UNC-A.
Communication is more than just talking and listening; it’s also about sending and receiving messages through attitude, tone of voice, facial expressions and body language. As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias progress in their journey and the ability to use words is lost, families need new ways to connect. Join us to explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease. The Effective Communication Strategies program of the Alzheimer’s Association was designed to provide practical information and resources to help dementia caregivers learn to decode verbal and behavioral messages from people with dementia.
