2025 CALENDAR

Happy Monday, Friends!

I hope everyone had a fantastic long holiday weekend—packed with smoky barbecue, time with family and friends, and maybe a firework or two (or twenty). Whether you spent it relaxing or catching up, I hope it was what you needed. And now… back to it!

Lately, there’s been no shortage of buzz around technology—and rightfully so. We’re witnessing major shifts in how we work, communicate, and deliver in design and construction. But here’s a reminder we all need:

The most powerful tool on any jobsite (or in any boardroom) is still the human mind.

At SLC3, we’ve long been committed to offering technical training that keeps pace with innovation. That’s not changing. But we’re doubling down on something just as critical—and maybe even more urgent right now: Essential Skills Training. (And no, we’re not calling them “soft” anymore. There’s nothing soft about skills that make or break business.)

🛠️ Why Essential Skills Are Mission-Critical Right Now:

✅ They build better leaders and teams. Communication, collaboration, and emotional intelligence drive successful projects.

✅ They close the gap in a tight labor market. When you can’t hire ten new people, make sure your current team is equipped to lead, manage, and problem-solve.

✅ They enhance your tech ROI. Tools are only as effective as the people using them. The tech doesn’t make decisions—you do.

✅ They’ve quietly eroded. Automation has replaced many of the everyday interactions and decisions that used to sharpen these skills.

✅ They are your customer’s experience. No matter how slick your system is, it’s your people who make the impression.

✅ They future-proof your workforce. As roles evolve, people who can adapt, lead, and think critically will always have value.

✅ They are the “X factor” for success. It’s not just what you know—it’s how you apply it, communicate it, and deliver it that counts.

We are proud to be a resource for both technical and essential skills—because let’s face it, success today means mastering both. And we want your input:

What essential skills do you see missing in your workplace or industry?

What topics would help your team grow?

Tell us. We’re listening—and building our next line-up of programs with YOU in mind.

Illinois American Water Expands Discount Program to Help More Customers

Beginning this month, Illinois American Water is expanding its Income-Based Discount Program to help more customers pay their water and wastewater bills.

The company is raising the income limit so more people can qualify for the program. Right now, customers must earn 150% or less of the Federal Poverty Level to be eligible. With this new effort, that limit increases to 300% of the Federal Poverty Level, allowing more families to receive help.

Since August 2023, Illinois American Water has worked with Dollar Energy Fund to offer monthly bill discounts to approved customers. Currently, customers get a 70% discount on the usage portion of their bill. Now, the program will switch to a four-tier system that offers different discount levels based on income—giving more help to those with the greatest need.

Illinois American Water says this change is part of its ongoing efforts to make water service affordable while continuing to invest in infrastructure to keep systems safe and reliable.

City of St. Louis Launches Four New Recovery Programs to Support Tornado-Affected Residents

The City of St. Louis has introduced four new recovery programs to assist residents impacted by the tornado. Designed to meet critical needs, these programs offer trusted repair support, expert advice, and protects homeowners from fraud and further damage. This coordinated citywide effort aims to help effected families begin the recovery process.

The following services are now available at no cost:

Free Electricity Reconnection

For homeowners who are without power—but whose homes have not sustained severe structural damage—licensed union electricians are available to help. Through a partnership with IBEW Local 1, NECA, ArchKey/Sachs, Guarantee Electric, RJP Electric, and the St. Louis Home Repair Network, residents can receive safe electrical reconnection services at no charge.

"Ask An Architect" Program

Residents now have access to free consultations with licensed architects to address storm-related questions and concerns. This service is generously provided by volunteer members of the American Institute of Architects St. Louis and can help guide decisions about repairs, rebuilding, or structural safety.

Contractor Registry for Safe and Reliable Hiring

To protect homeowners during the rebuilding process, the city has launched a Contractor Registry that allows residents to verify whether a contractor is licensed, insured, and certified. This tool is designed to help prevent fraud and ensure that storm recovery efforts are handled by qualified professionals.

Emergency Stabilization Services

Rapid-response teams are now available to secure damaged properties and prevent further harm. Services include roof tarping, boarding up broken windows or doors, debris removal, and hazardous tree removal. These immediate interventions are intended to protect homes while long-term repairs are arranged.

Again, all programs are available free of charge to qualifying residents. They are part of the city's broader recovery initiative to help the community rebuild safely and efficiently.

These efforts mark a strong step forward in restoring safety, stability, and confidence for St. Louis residents.

Want to Win More Work? Start Listening. (Like, Actually Listening.)

If you’re in the business of serving clients (and let’s be real—everyone is), then let me ask you something: How do you know you’re truly meeting your customer’s needs?

Not guessing. Not assuming. Not doing what you’ve always done and hoping it still works. I mean actually knowing—because you’ve asked, you’ve checked in, and you’ve listened.

Lately, I’ve been talking a lot about prompting—yes, the magical art of getting great responses from tools like ChatGPT. But here’s the thing: my strength in prompting doesn’t come from technical know-how. It comes from something a lot more human—active listening.

Active listening means you’re not just hearing words—you’re picking up on tone, asking follow-up questions, and genuinely trying to understand what’s behind the ask. It’s not waiting to talk. It’s being present.

And whether you’re using AI or just talking with a client or colleague, the same rule applies: If you don’t ask the right questions, you won’t get the right answers.

Here’s how to level up your listening game (and your client relationships while you’re at it):

 1. Check In Before You Check Out

Don’t wait until the end of a project (or worse—until they leave you) to ask how things are going. Build in check-ins. Ask:

“Is this working for you?”

“What’s something we could be doing better?”

“Has anything changed since we last talked?”

 2. Listen Like You’re Wrong

We all like to be the expert in the room. But when you assume you already know the answer, you stop listening. Drop the ego. Ask open-ended questions and prepare to be surprised.

✅ 3. Clarify Like a Champ

Don’t be afraid to paraphrase and repeat back what you heard. It shows you care enough to get it right—and catches misunderstandings early.

✅ 4. Follow the Breadcrumbs

Sometimes, the real need is hidden under layers of polite surface talk. Listen for what’s not being said. Follow up on little comments. Dig deeper.

✅ 5. Document and Deliver

Once you hear it, do something with it. Make a note. Share it with your team. Circle back later to show you were paying attention.

Habit #28: High Hands

Attacks can come in the form of criticism, but also as inappropriate demands on your heart, mind, body, and resources.

In boxing it’s not just who can land amazing punches, it’s also who can slip, roll, and block with high hands - to stay in the match.

The same can be said of boundaries for your life. They are important to avoid burn out, early fatigue, distractions, and increase productivity and longevity.

It's okay to say, "no" and "not yet." Hold your hands high.

Remember:

Personal boundaries are necessary for sustainability.

Performance Tips:

  • Saying no and adding boundaries is okay.
  • Be wary of people who do not respect your boundaries or push back on them. Clearly communicate your boundaries. If they still aren’t respected, take appropriate action.
  • Treat yourself as though you are worth protecting. Communicate your worth to others through boundaries.
