Message from the Chair
From Dr. Catherine Spong:
Reputation voting for U.S. News & World Report is now open to all board-certified physicians.
Boarded physicians registered with Doximity can vote and influence these rankings. Please watch for an email from Doximity to participate.

Even if you do not receive an email, you can vote by logging in to Doximity.com or using the Doximity app. Voting is open until mid-March.
Please note, we are listed as “UT Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas, TX).” Physicians may vote for up to five institutions. Given the large role our department has at Parkland, we also welcome your vote for “Parkland Health (Dallas, TX)".

These rankings help shine the light on our important work, and they have proved a factor in shaping patients’ opinions about providers and hospitals. Last year UT Southwestern Medical Center ranked as number 52 in the nation for obstetrics and gynecology. With your support, we can keep climbing up the list of top-performing specialties. Learn more about the methodology behind this year’s rankings.

I am so grateful for your hard work, and I am proud of your continued strive for improvement. I look forward to seeing our reputation grow in these rankings, making more people aware of the work you do every day to carry out our missions of patient care, research, and education.

Clinical Highlights
Signature Programs
Complex Contraception
While family planning services such as contraception are available for most patients through providers in obstetrics and gynecology and family medicine, the UT Southwestern Complex Contraception Program provides contraceptive counseling for patients with medical comorbidities or unique considerations who seek to prevent pregnancy.

We offer telemedicine and in-person visits at the Lowe Foundation Women’s Center by
Dr. Courtney Baker, a specialist in complex family planning.
Vulvar and Vaginal Health
Many common conditions can affect the vagina (the canal that connects the internal and external female reproductive organs) and vulva (the external female genital area), causing irritation and discomfort. Many vulvovaginal issues can lead to problems with sexual desire and enjoyment as well as overall well-being.

At UT Southwestern, we have both dermatologists and gynecologists, such as Dr. Meredith McClure, who treat patients with vulvar conditions.
PETAL: Pelvic Floor Evaluation and Treatment Around Labor and Delivery
Under the leadership of Rachael Medrano, our Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Clinic now offers care for peri-partum women experiencing pelvic floor dysfunction through what is colloquially referred to as the PETAL Program.

Appropriate ObGyn clinics will be receiving brochures to display for this new offering.

CenterTimes Feature: eMCAP Program
A unique program that provides access to postpartum care up to 12 months after childbirth for new mothers with the highest social needs has been recognized by The Joint Commission and National Quality Forum with a 2022 John M. Eisenberg Award.
“We are honored to receive this award recognizing our efforts in underserved areas of Dallas County,” said program leader Dr. David Nelson, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chief of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. “Through partnership with UT Southwestern and Parkland Health, our team has developed a program that focuses on positively impacting our local community through improving maternal health care after birth, which is a time that many patients are most vulnerable.”

Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine: A Recap
Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine team had a blast at the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine Pregnancy Meeting in San Francisco, CA.

Our department was well represented with multiple oral and poster presentations.

Additionally, UT Southwestern MS4, Lisa Thiele, presented and was given the Disparities Award for Best Research on Diversity/Disparity in Health Outcomes for her abstract, "Providing free prenatal iron supplements to pregnant patients reduces maternal anemia and transfusion." This project was co-authored by Drs. Duryea, McIntire, Nelson, and Spong.

Texas Collaborative for Healthy Mothers and Babies Conference
Last week nurses, researchers, and health agencies gathered in Austin, TX to attend the Texas Collaborative for Healthy Mothers and Babies Conference.

The purpose of this conference is to address maternal mortality and morbidity in Texas as state lawmakers consider bills aimed at expanding family health care access.

Drs. Morgan, Patel, and Horsager-Boehrer were in attendance along with the CUH Director of Women’s Services and several of our CUH post-partum, NICU, and L&D nurses.

News Release: Young pregnant adolescents at increased risk of preeclampsia, C-section, UTSW study shows
Young adolescents face different challenges in pregnancy compared with their older teenage peers and adults that are sometimes exacerbated by high rates of obesity, a new study by UT Southwestern researchers suggests.

The findings, published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology MFM, could highlight at-risk populations for targeted prevention efforts.
“This study highlights the unique perinatal characteristics of a population that are not often studied in the U.S. – adolescents between the ages of 10 and 15. Knowledge of these patients’ characteristics and outcomes shows that we have opportunities to intervene to prevent pregnancy and make a real difference in their well-being,” said Dr. Anne Ambia, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern, who co-led the study with Dr. David Nelson, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Division Chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at UT Southwestern.
To learn more about this younger population, Drs. Ambia and Nelson, along with colleagues at UT Southwestern and Parkland Health, searched medical records for patients under age 35 who gave birth for the first time between January 2010 and May 2021 at Parkland Health, a safety net hospital that serves patients in Dallas and is UT Southwestern’s primary teaching facility. Of the 33,391 patients identified, 10,894 were adolescents under age 20, and 868 of them were 15 years old or younger at the time of delivery.

Video Abstract: LULU Study
Each year, thousands of patients undergo urodynamic studies. Typically, these studies are done using aqueous gel during the placement of trans-urethral catheters. However, even with the gel, some patients experience discomfort during the tests.

Christy Hicks and Drs. Schaffer, Pruszynski, and Rahn sought to determine if instead, lidocaine gel could be used to decrease discomfort and not interfere with the accuracy of these tests. See the study.
Recent Published Research
Drs. Jessica Shields, Lisa Chao, Stephanie Chang, Kim Kho and Laura Kenyon collaborated on the study, "Ice-POP: Ice Packs for Postoperative Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial" for the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology.

Dr. Catherine Spong and MS4 Lisa Thiele co-authored this paper titled, "Inclusion of Pregnant and Lactating People in Clinical Research: Lessons Learned and Opportunities" for Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics of North America.

Drs. Blaine Holloway, Alyssa Mercadel, David Miller, and Jayanthi Lea's work was recently accepted for publishing in Gynecologic Oncology. The study, "Isolated para-aortic nodal recurrence after treatment of early stage cervical carcinoma," will run in the journal's March issue.

Dr. Maria Florian-Rodriguez worked alongside other researchers on "Smooth muscle contribution to vaginal viscoelastic response" for the Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials.

Dr. Christina Herrera co-authored the study, "Preterm Birth and Corticotrophin-Releasing Hormone as a Placental Clock" for Endocrinology.

Dr. David Miller collaborated with various other authors on, "Uterine Neoplasms, Version 1.2023, NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology" for the Official Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.

Remembering Dr. Carole Mendelson
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our colleague and friend Dr. Carole Mendelson on February 12, 2023.

For decades, Dr. Mendelson brought her keen insights and incredible determination to the scientific community at UT Southwestern and beyond, as well as a broad array of accomplishments in the fields of endocrinology, reproductive biology, and gene regulation.

The Mendelson lab, part of UT Southwestern’s Cecil H. and Ida Green Center for Reproductive Biology Sciences, was funded by the National Institutes of Health, the March of Dimes Foundation, and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. She held an NIH MERIT Award from 1998 to 2008.
An active member of the Endocrine Society for more than three decades, she championed the promotion of women in science. Additionally, she was an inaugural member of the UT Southwestern Women in Science and Medicine Advisory Committee from its inception in 1994 and co-chaired the committee for the past 12 years.

Dr. Mendelson's scientific acumen and her pioneering efforts for women’s advancement in science will leave an enduring imprint at UT Southwestern. She will be greatly missed.

Truly the Best
We're proud to showcase our faculty members who were recognized among DFW's "Best Doctors" and "Super Doctors" in 2021-2022.

While such honors are nice, they're only acknowledgements of what we do best - caring for patients - and are confirmations that we truly have the best ObGyn physicians in the Metroplex.

These new counter cards will be on display in clinics very soon.

Congratulations, doctors!
