Message from the Chair
From Dr. Catherine Spong:
Now having had the joy of serving as the Chair of Department for a year, I have seen growth in so many areas of our department, and I am proud of all that we accomplish together each day. Looking back on the year past, and ahead to the many years to come, I see opportunities, challenges, impact, and advances across our work.

Together, we have recruited 46 valuable new team members (24 faculty and 22 staff), and are training 72 residents and 18 fellows. We have continued to adapt to the restraints of the COVID-19 pandemic and the current political landscape. We have worked diligently to produce exceptional research, robust educational programs, and develop a program that successfully recruits innovative faculty. But above all, we have continued to provide outstanding care for the patients we see.
I look forward to outlining our departmental goals and vision for the next year at our upcoming faculty and staff meetings. As a teaser: over the next year we will launch signature programs, grow our services, attract a new class of Ob/Gyn trainees, submit exciting grants, publish life-changing manuscripts, and more. And we will do it as a team.

I am excited about the year to come, and I hope you are, too.
Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
From Dr. Jaya Lea:
September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

Ovarian cancer is the most common cause of gynecologic cancer deaths in the United States -- but unfortunately, there is currently no early detection method. However, one of the best things we can do to ensure excellent outcomes for our ovarian cancer patients is to provide them with high quality surgery.

Our team is highly recognized for ovarian cancer surgery. UT Southwestern has gynecologic oncology surgeons with expertise in radical cytoreductive surgeries, heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy at time of surgery, and minimally invasive surgery.
Professor and Program Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship
Our patients are offered clinical trials in phases I, II, and III so they have opportunities to receive new and innovative treatment options. Additionally, through translational research, we investigate novel biomarkers to be used as early detection modalities of ovarian cancer.

Finally, as part of our department's efforts to expand women's health services, we are launching a program specifically for women who are risk for developing ovarian cancer. Through this program, all at-risk patients will receive leading-edge care and counseling to optimize their outcomes. We look forward with sharing more about this program with you soon.

Department Announcements
Happy 50 Years, Dr. Cunningham!
The UT Southwestern Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology celebrates Dr. Gary Cunningham.

He made the department his home in 1973 and we revel in 50 years of his wisdom, teaching, and continued clinical efforts. As a past Chair and current faculty member, the impact which he has had on our trainees, faculty, clinical, and research efforts cannot be overestimated. His curiosity and passion for learning is palpable. To this day, when we have a complicated patient, Dr. Cunningham's expertise is tapped.

We are so grateful for the many things, big and small, he has done for the betterment of our department. Thank you, Dr. Cunningham. We’ll see you on the wards tomorrow.

Tracey Peacock Wins Award for UT Southwestern's Art Exhibit
Tracey Peacock, our newest GME Program Coordinator I, took home the "Honorable Mention Amateur: Ceramics, Glass and Wood" Award for her submission titled, "You Have My Heart" in the 2022 On My Own Time Art Exhibit. This art exhibit is held each year to highlight the creative talents of almost 1,000 participants across our campus.

In Tracey's words, "This piece has a twofold representation. It is symbolic of the love I have for my spouse and also has a special meaning as my father-in-law was a cardiac anesthesiologist."

Congratulations, Tracey!
