Week 53 - December 30th - National Bacon Day
The History of National Bacon Day
Though the holiday was created in 1997 as a way to take a break from celebrating the traditional winter holidays, the consumption of pork dates back thousands of years to 4900 B.C. where the Chinese domesticated pigs and preserved pork bellies with salt. This practice is believed to have made its way to the Romans and Greeks through conquests in the Middle East and by 1500 B.C. had largely impacted both production and preservation of pork in the Roman Empire. Ancient Roman’s early form of bacon, or “petaso,” was pig shoulder broiled with dried figs, browned and served with wine.
The word “bacon” can be traced back to various languages from before the 12th century. Most notably from the French word “bako,” the Germanic “bakkon” and the Old Teutonic word “backe,” all of which specifically refer to the rear of the pig. During the 16th Century, the word “bacoun” was used to refer to any kind of pork. And it wasn’t until the 17th Century that “bacon” was used solely to refer to the salted and smoked pork belly that we know today.
Considering how easy and cheap it was to own pigs, its no wonder during Medieval Times bacon was very common among Anglo-Saxon peasants. Each family and butcher had their own recipe for curing and smoking bacon. The sheer variety of bacon, sausage, and black pudding that you could buy in Victorian England created an almost golden age of pork.
The popular phrase “bring home the bacon” can be traced to the 12 century, in the English town of Dunmow. The church promised to reward a side of bacon to any married man who swore before God and the congregation that he would not quarrel with his wife for a year and a day.
And now for something completely different. We asked the staff to list out their top five "best" things they liked in the shop this past year. So what follows are those lists to wrap up 2024 here from Brookhurst Hobbies. Happy New Year!
Now let's get into what's new in the store.

We asked the team here at Brookhurst Hobbies to give us their five "best things" of the year here at the shop. With such a diverse group of interests, that seemed the best way to capture the full scope of everything we carry and what stood out to each of them over the past year. | |

Horus Heresy Mechanicus: Thanatar Cavas Siege-automata
This is the first time that this model has been released in plastic, prior it was only in resin. Just an absolutely gorgeous mech model. It was the first Warhammer model I personally fell in love with, I just couldn't justify getting it in a resin kit.

Eduard 1/48 The Bloody Hundredth 1943
So much to love about this kit. It's packed full of PE and other detail items, it includes markings and the necessary modifications to build three different noses and seven different planes of the Bloody 100th Squadron. The 100th was featured in the TV mini-series "Masters of Air" earlier this year/ It was also done in co-operation with the 100th Bomb Group Foundation, so it includes detailed notes about each plane and crew as well as a commaritive pin/badge with the unit insignia. A real treasure trove of a kit for anyone who loves the history and context of a kit they are building.

Magic Factory 1/48 Dual Kit F4U-1A/2 Corsair

MiniArt 1/35 M3 Lee Mid Production
This ia late entry to the best of, I have it, but have only cracked the box open to inspect and not started building it. That being said, it's a beautiful and detailed package. It's going to be my first attempt at a tank with a full interior and I anxious to dig into it based on what I see.

Tamiya 1/48 Grumman FM-1 Wildcat/Martlet
Made the the usual Tamiya high standards, I liked this kit because it's an interesting subject and markings. I'm building the D-Day RAF version and the fit so far has been easy and intuitive. Mine just needs paint to be finished!

Airfix 1/35 Ferret Scout Car Mk.2
On a trip to the UK in 2023 I saw one of these at the Imperial War Museum in UN colors. I decided to copy that look and have been very pleased so far with the Airfix kit. Logical and detailed instructions, three different options to build. It's a solid kit that won't break the bank, take six months or frustrate you with a bunch of problems to overcome. Good stuff!

Airfix 1/72 Consolidated B-24H Liberator
The second of America's great four-engined heavy bombers of the Second World War, the Consolidated B-24 Liberator began development after the Army Air Corps approached the company to build B-17 Flying Fortresses. They instead designed and built their own take on a heavy bomber, the B-24
When the XB-24 prototype took to the air on 29th December 1939, it was a very different-looking aeroplane to the B-17 Flying Fortress, with its shoulder-mounted thin wings, deep, yet narrow fuselage and twin-boom tail, it had a maritime aircraft appearance about it.
Following its eventual USAAF introduction in 1941, the B-24 Liberator was produced in vast quantities, serving in every theatre during the Second World War, and making a vital contribution to the Allied War effort.

Winged Dragon of Ra and Black Luster Soldier from YU-Gi-Oh
From the show YU-Gi-Oh comes these two kits that were always awesome to see in the show and now Bandai has made them into model kits so you can build and repaint if you wanted. I couldn't personally choose between these two has booth were really cool to build and they were also very significant to me, Black Luster Soldier being one of the coolest warrior monsters from the first season of the show and The Winged Dragon of Ra was a very imposing and terrifying divine beast that the kit brings it from the show to plastic.

King Tigers
PzKpfw VI Ausf. B Tiger II or colloquially Konigstiger (Polish royal tiger) was a German heavy tank from World War II. The first prototypes of the vehicle were built in 1943, and serial production continued in 1944-1945, ending with the production of 487 vehicles. The Tiger II was powered by a single Maybach HL 230 P30 engine producing 700hp. It was armed with 1 88mm PaK 43 L / 71 gun and 2 7.92mm MG34 machine guns.
PzKpfw VI Ausf. The B Tiger II was created in connection with the commission by Albert Speer in January 1943 of the Henschel and Porsche plants to design a new heavy tank for the German armed forces. The first prototypes were ready by October this year, and a car designed by the Henschel company entered mass production, with 50 units of the new tank having a tower designed by Porsche (the so-called Porsche tower). The royal tiger had a great anti-tank gun, capable of destroying any armored vehicle of the Red Army or Allies at the time at a distance of 1500-2000 m. It was also very well armored, and its armor was carefully contoured. In fact, the new German tank was unattainable for most enemy vehicles at distances above 1000-1200 m. Undoubtedly, the Tiger II had numerous disadvantages: first of all, the engine was definitely too weak, which was the same as the 11 tons lighter Tiger I. The gearbox was also damaged. and the entire driveline system, which was extremely failing and prone to failure.
The Tiger II was also incredibly time-consuming and expensive to produce, which, taking into account the difficult situation of Germany on the fronts in the period 1944-1945, was also a big minus. The Royal Tiger underwent its baptism of fire during the Normandy operation in the summer of 1944 as part of the 503rd Heavy Tank Battalion and 101st SS Heavy Tank Battalion. Later, units equipped with these tanks also fought on the Eastern Front in 1944-1945, and perhaps the largest number of Tiger II tanks in one operation was used in the offensive in the Ardennes at the turn of 1944-1945.
We may look at some of these in more detail later.
