Laura Zitella Receives America's Top NP 2024 Award
Laura Zitella, ACNP-BC, AOCN is an NP in the UCSF Hematology, Blood and Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy (SBC) program. She was recently awarded the America's Top NP Award for Oncology. The America's Top NP is a peer nominated award given annually to select NPs across several specialties who have demonstrated leadership through improved patient outcomes and peer community support, advancement, and education. Laura is actively involved in the Advance Practice Provider Oncology Summit (APPOS), Advanced Practitioner Society for Hematology and Oncology (APSHO), the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), and the CLL Society. She serves on the Medical Advisory Board of the CLL Society, the Journal of Advanced Practitioner in Oncology editorial board and several oncology conference planning committees. Laura co-edited the Hematologic Malignancies in Adults textbook, which was awarded an American Medical Wrtiers Association Medical Book Award Honorable Mention. Read more

APPs Successfully Complete the 2024 The Leadership Academy for the Advanced Practice Provider (LeAP)
Congratulations to the following 20 APPs for completing the 2024 LeAP program. The program started in March 2024 and included monthly 4-hour leadership sessions, two executive coaching sessions, a leader shadowing experience and completion of a evidenced-based practice project proposal. They developed the awareness of their individual strengths as a leader, demonstrated competence of the technical skills required for effective leadership including financial managment, health care policy and economics, as well as executive presence and communication. New Indoor Heat Illness Prevention Training
A One-Time Requirement
As part of UCSF Health's commitment to create a safe work environment, there is a new training to build awareness around indoor heat illness prevention. The training is part of the ongoing response to the Bay Area's more frequent periods of high temperatures and will help ensure we are compliant with the latest Cal/OSHA regulatory standards. The training is a one-time requirement for all employees (Campus and Health) and takes only 20 minutes to complete. You should have received an email from training@ucsf.edu of how to access and complete the course on UCSF Learning platform. Deadline to complete the training is March 4, 2025.

Earn a UCSF Certificate in Global Nursing Program
The UCSF Center for Global Nursing registration is open for their certificate program. The opportunity is for nurses and APPs (includes PAs) who are interested in exploring the field of global health science with nursing faculty from UCSF and across the globe. The course includes weekly two-hour live virtual sessions, accompanied by required readings and asynchronous online activities. Students should expect to dedicate at least 4 hours per week to synchronous and asynchronous coursework. Program schedule January 28, 2025-April 15, 2025 all courses are held online from 8am-10am PST. Learn more about the certificate program.

What is the Difference Between Access and Inclusion?
Save the dates February 5, 12, or 26, 2025 from 12-130pm to explore complex questions such as what is the difference between access and inclusion, what is disability justice and its relationship to racial justice, what is ableism? Alex Locust, a black biracial, queer, disability justice educator activist and "Glamputee", will guide partcipatnts through key aspects of disability justice, including the movement's history, the impact of ableism and microaggressions, and actionable strategies for fostering inclusivity at UCSF. Project Cheer Toy Drive: Accepting Toy Donations
Project Cheer brings joy to patients in the hospitals every year and there many ways to get involved. Find full details here. UCSF can help brighten the holidays for patients and families and make sure that the magic of this special season is felt throughout the hospitals.

Leadership Update: Interim President for Adult Business Unit
Dr. Lukejohn Day will serve as interim president of the adult business unit following Cynthia Barginere's departure while a national search for a permanent candidate is conducted. Dr. Day has brought extensive leadership experience to his role as UCSF Health System Chief Medical Officer, overseeing the standardization of medical care practices and operations across the health system and enhancing coordination between inpatient and outpatient services. Previously, he served as CMO at ZSFGH, leveraging his expertise to improve healthcare delivery and quality in large healthcare systems.

Volunteers Needed For High School Healthcare Careers Conference
On Saturday, February 1st from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, Life Academy (walking distance from Fruitvale BART in Oakland) will be hosting its in-person 7th annual Healthcare Careers conference for Oakland Unified School District high school students. The goal is for students to learn about the incredible variety of healthcare professions, to meet and ask questions of healthcare providers, and to learn a touch of hands on clinical skills if possible. Providers will be divided by organized by specialty with a goal of having many different careers represented in a single room (ie OB/GYN with a doula, midwife, OB RN, GYN MA, surgical tech, MD, NP, etc). What is Transitional Care Management --Do you provide this care?
CPT codes 99495 & 99496 can be used upon the date of discharge and continues for the next 29 days. There are no restrictions on specialty designation.
Criteria for use:
- Communication (direct contact, telephone, electronic) with the patient/or caregiver within 2 business days of discharge
- Face-to-face within 14 calendar days (CPT 99495 or 7 calendar days (99496) of discharge
- Medical decision making of at least moderate complexity (CPT 99495) or high complexity (99496) during the service period

New Program Offers Employee Mental Health and Well-Being Support
The UCSF HR Wellness team recently launched the Cope Program to provide mental health and well-being support and resources to UCSF employees and their family members. A confidential and interactive digital health tool available in multiple languages. Cope connects users to a wide array of support services and features a curated collection of self-directed tools and interventions, including webinars, apps, videos and specialized support information.
