Lab Stewardship--Reducing Unnecessary Labs
submitted by Dr. Theodore Peng, Associate Director Cardiac Hospitalist Service
Unnecessary labs contribute to unnecessary cost and wasted laboratory staff time, and can lead to excess venipuncture, iatrogenic anemia, prolonged length of stay, and increased mortality in hospitalized patients. Compared to peer academic medical centers, UCSF orders significantly more labs per inpatient hospitalization. As part of the Caring Wisely initiative, the newly established UCSF Lab Stewardship Program is working to address this by reducing unnecessary CBCs with Differential.
CBC w/diff can take nearly 4 times longer than CBC alone. For more info about CBC or CBC w/Diff, click here. Contact Anoop.Muniyappa@ucsf.edu and Theodore.Peng@ucsf.edu with any questions.
