QUALITY & SAFETY

Receiving Feedback Can Be Difficult

Contributed by Michael Rabow, MD Director, Symptom Management Service

As we continually work to improve communication and clinical care, soliciting and valuing feedback from patients and families is key. However, receiving feedback can be difficult. The medical and business literature is filled with recommendations and studies exploring various aspects of how to receive feedback; Harvard Business Review paper: Processing feedback goes far beyond listening to it in the moment and implementing it. It involves continuous reflection, conversation, and practice.

If feedback hurts personally, as you start to feel defensive reading your patient comments, here are a few things to keep in mind.

1.Listen

2.Process

3.Empathize

4.Have self-compassion and Find community

Click here to learn more about receiving feedback.

Press Ganey Comments about NPs, PA, CRNAs, Midwives

Cancer Center San Mateo : NP Rinaldi (Marie Rinaldi ) complimented Dr. Ekstrand's kindness throughout my treatment.

OB GYN MZ: Nurse Midwife Seger (Suzanne Seger) was exceptional and a welcome relief from the Sutter doctor I had briefly. I am so happy I got assigned to Ms.Seger. She was friendly and made great eye contact. My case is complicated and could be hard to handle but she made everything comfortable and easy. I was anxious going into the visit and a bit self conscious and walked out feeling reassured and supported.

DGIM: Stephanie (Phillips-Bright), NP was friendly, thoughtful, professional and straightforward. I so appreciated meeting her and her care.

Lakeshore Primary: Caitryn Lim, Nurse Practitioner was caring and professional. She made me feel comfortable.
