Dear Members,
It has been a long hot summer here in Denton. While I have enjoyed the time to paint and read I miss seeing your faces and being together. We will be taking this fall one month at a time as we monitor the state and local guidelines for meetings.
There is a lot going on in VAST so visit the website since it is being updated daily. Check out the collaboration with Historic Denton, Inc to add some art to street signs and the totem pole project with the Woodturners Guild. (More information below.) Both of these collaborations are fun and "out of the box" projects, everyone can employ their talent. These two art projects will be visible in Denton for the community to enjoy.
The September 2 meeting will be an online Zoom meeting featuring John Bramblitt "demonstrating a multi-sensory approach to art and how to diversify the business side of art during times of Covid."
Hopefully, the falling numbers in Denton will continue and we will be able to meet in person in October. When we do return to face to face meetings we will follow the guidelines established by GDAC-PAAC for safety that we will follow for all gatherings. We will also continue to have our meetings on Zoom even when we return to PAAC through the fall.

Zoom is a way to communicate using your phone or computer to communicate with others on their computer.
First you will need to download the Zoom app (which is free) from https://zoom.us/download. Make sure you do this before the meeting starts so you don't have to worry about getting it downloaded the day of the meeting. Once the app is downloaded it will look like a small blue film camera on your computer or phone (shown above).

4. Enter your meeting ID and click or hit join. You will then be in the meeting. Make sure that your video camera is on and your audio is off during the presentation. If you have a question you would like to ask, type it in the chat box (to open the chat box, wand over the bottom of your screen with the mouse and click on the Chat icon).

VAST September 2 Artist, John Bramblitt |
|
John Bramblitt, local artist, will be our first Speaker and demonstrator for the VAST monthly meeting September 2 at 6 pm. He will discuss and demonstrate how he takes a multi-discipline approach to art. Bramblitt will also discuss how to diversify the business side of art during the times of Covid.
After losing his eyesight in 2001, John Bramblitt decided to pick up a paint brush. He never expected anyone to see any of his paintings; he just knew he needed to reconnect with the visual world he had lost. Since then his work has been featured in the New York Times, Discovery Channel, most major news outlets and much more. He has worked with celebrities such as Tony Hawk, Jeff Bridges, Lyle Lovett, and many more. He has received three presidential service awards for his innovative multi-sensory art workshops. Recently, Bramblitt painted a Boeing 737 for Delta to promote the Rock-in-Rio concert, the largest concert in the world.

Not only is Bramblitt ranked as the #1 blind painter in the world, he is now the only blind muralist having completed projects in New York, Dallas and Fort Worth. He recently was named a cultural ambassador for the US. He has shared his story with audiences for the past ten years, energizing organizations and motivating people to exceed their limits. His unique journey from the dark has enabled him to connect with a visual world and act as a beacon for others experiencing struggles. John's motivational talks and art celebrate diversity and promote overcoming obstacles.

We have a need for some special talents that are important but not overwhelming. I promise the experience of getting to know more people in VAST. Bringing your ideas and talents to the table will be rewarding!
1. Would you like to help with VAST publicity? The Publicity Committee send PR for nine guest artists presentations, and three exhibitions to online newspapers and online venues. If interested, contact Rebecca Barham at [email protected] and Barbara Lindley at [email protected].
2. Do you like history? We do and we need a historian to sort through our files and make sense of determining what to upload to the website. Dina will actually do the archiving on the website. Contact Barbara Lindley ([email protected]) or Dina Good ([email protected]).
3. Do you have art exhibition prospectus guideline experience? How to properly capture photos that enhance your work, how to meet the proper size requirements. We would like a workshop for our membership. It may be in person or online, would you enjoy offering this type of education? There are several people that would assist if we have someone to organize. Contact Mindy Faubion ([email protected]) or Barbara Lindley ([email protected]).
4. Do you like finance and accounting, we have hired a bookkeeper and have a treasurer but would like to have another person or two to pick up mail, participate in planning projects, etc. it is a great opportunity to understand what happens with our income. The Visual Arts Society of Texas sponsors this annual event to offer its members an important opportunity to enter their work in a juried exhibition that showcases members only. The exhibit provides an excellent venue for the North Texas community to appreciate the high quality and diverse nature of art produced by area artists.
In the case of the PAAC closing in the fall, due to Covid19, we will still have an online members exhibit!

The entry fee is $20 for VAST members.
Memberships can be renewed on our website through PayPal. Contact Mary at [email protected] if you have questions of membership. Artists may enter two pieces for jurying. Each entering artist will have one piece selected for inclusion in the exhibition.

Digital images must be jpg files with 300 pixels per inch resolution and a width and/or height on the longest side of exactly 1800 pixels/or 6 inches. Digital images that do not comply will not be accepted. Catalogs should be available to participating artists during the reception on October 30.

VAST 175 Mile Exhibition (formerly 125 Mile)

The 175 Mile Exhibition will take place November 10th through December 12th. In case of closing in the fall due to Covid 19, we will still have an online exhibit!
PURPOSE AND ELIGIBILITY
The 175-Mile Exhibition, formerly the 125-Mile Exhibition, was upgraded this year, 2020, to include artists living within 175 miles of Denton, TX. This VAST sponsored event was initiated in 2006 to establish a regional, high quality, juried exhibition for artists to compete and show their work at the Meadows Gallery in the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 E. Hickory, Denton, TX 76201.

JUROR
Elizabeth A. Yarosz-Ash is a nationally recognized and award-winning artist, teacher and juror. Yarosz-Ash is Professor Emeritus at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, TX. In 1991, she was selected for the University’s Hardin Professor Award and has been a full professor since 1992. From 2002 – 2004, Yarosz-Ash served as President of the Watercolor U.S.A. Create Visual Identities for Denton Neighborhoods:
Design an Image for Sign Toppers.

Historic Denton, Inc., a local non-profit organization, is in a continuing process of researching all of Denton’s historic neighborhoods and is working with the City of Denton in the creation of street sign toppers.
Visual Arts Society of Texas is working with Historic Denton, Inc. to select artists and aid in the facilitation of the artistic designs for the street sign toppers.
Denton lacks named neighborhoods and the unity of knowing about the historical background of its neighborhoods.
Example:
· How do you describe the neighborhood where you live, or tell people about your neighborhood?
· Do you reference street names or the name of your neighborhood?
· Is there a clear definition of each neighborhood where you live?
Neighborhoods do have names but without use, they have been forgotten.
Artists are invited to submit designs to create a visual identity which represents each neighborhood in Denton. The designs will be used as sign toppers that will be posted on top of each traffic street sign at the corners of the streets in the neighborhoods.
Project Goal: Create an identity for a neighborhood which will be visualized on a sign topper.

Artists will work with Historic Denton, Inc. to create an image or brand for a neighborhood to be used as a sign and placed atop city street signs. Historic Denton can help in the design process by sharing information about the original neighborhoods names and history, which artists can use to help create designs for the street sign toppers. The desired result will be neighborhood pride and recognition.
Neighborhoods will be asked to select the design that best represent them from designs submitted by artists. The City of Denton will create the signs from the selected design and place the neighborhood distinctive markers on the identified mapped locations.
The design images should tell the story of Denton via the residents and neighborhoods which created our city.
VAST and Historic Denton will help you select a neighborhood. Artists may submit designs for any neighborhood; the Artist Call is not limited to artists living within a specific neighborhood.
Residents of each neighborhood will be included in selecting the final designs. Artist will be recognized by the neighborhoods, VAST, and with acknowledgement of their efforts by the City of Denton.

Reserve a Project Location: Let us know your interest for a neighborhood by writing to Jo Williams at [email protected]. You will then be given historical information and can be referred to Historic Denton, Inc. to further develop your ideas.

"Off the Shelves" exhibition at Emily Fowler Central Library
New artist work up at Emily Fowler library! Dina Good's work is up at the library for approximately four months. Even though the library is not yet open to the public, the employees are enjoying the new art! Watch for the opening for patrons.
Dina’s Artist Statement:
As a Texan, I am in love with things that are big, open, and colorful, yet also subtle and nuanced. Through my artwork, I try to create tension and emotion through form, contrast, and light. Everything is captured in the spontaneous dance and movement of the paint as it connects to the canvas. While I make no attempt to portray actual places or scenes, I do want my paintings to suggest a viewpoint and create an emotion.
My work doesn’t reference recognizable form. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. By examining the ambiguity and origination via retakes and variations, I create intense personal moments by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles as the meaning shifts and the emotion surfaces.

Shirley Reece-Hughes will describe the exhibition Texas Made Modern: The Art of Everett Spruce, which features artworks dating from the 1920s to the 1970s that convey the artist’s deep

communion with the land expressed through his sophisticated array of styles. As this talk reveals, Spruce’s childhood growing up on farms attuned him to the vicissitudes of nature and imbued him with an understanding of ecology that informs his subjects.
Examining the original motifs and spatial rhythms that Spruce devised in his work, which suggested new ideas and experiences of Texas for twentieth-century audiences, this talk will examine the artist’s interest in history, time, and place as amalgams of experience.
