Studying for Online Finals

Tips for a Successful Virtual Finals Week

By now, thanks to the pandemic of a few years ago, most of us are pretty accustomed to some form of online learning. However, it's always good to remember that there are some special nuances to taking exams online. Here are a few helpful tips to remember as you're prepping:

  1. Study & prepare just like every other final. Online doesn’t necessarily mean easier – make sure to study just as much and as hard as you would for any other final format.
  2. Determine where and when you’re going to take your test. If you don’t have a set quiet space you usually use, have your spot picked out and set a few days prior to when you’ll be taking your exam to make sure it’s available.
  3. Prep your computer. Nothing ruins an online final more than computer trouble. Make sure you have all the proper software you’ll need installed and working correctly, and that your internet connection is strong and in good shape.
  4. Get dressed and have a good breakfast as if you were going out for a regular exam. Taking a final in your pajamas in bed sounds great, but it also runs the risk of being too comfortable – it could end up making you sleepy or lose your focus since you’re so comfy.
  5. Make sure your family/roommates know you’re not available. If you have a busy household, announce ahead of time that you’re taking your exam and can’t be interrupted. Even post a Do Not Disturb sign on your door if needed.

The Sandbox wishes you the best of luck on your finals, Dolphins! You got this!

What To Do Before Finals - The Fool-Proof Way to Study Without the Stress

"Even if tests don’t have quite that feeling for you, they still provoke anxiety. Here’s the thing: after a lot of therapy, working through those testing (especially academic testing) anxieties, I’ve learned to become cool, calm, level-headed, almost to the point of Zen. My friends can attest to the fact that I am one of the most relaxed test-takers they’ve seen. Let me show you how I do it."

Coastline ASG Members Attend Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) Advocacy Academy

On November 22nd-24th, three ASG officers represented the Coastline’s student body at the Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) Advocacy Academy in Sacramento. All three student leaders used the statewide platform to advocate for students, speaking on the microphone to a room of 400+ other student leaders throughout the state.

ASG Equity Senator Thalia Espinoza shared the need to augment support for students who are undocumented and used the time at the conference to recruit for a new caucus for undocumented students and allies through the SSCCC. ASG Distance Learning Senator Kifah Mohammed spoke about his experiences as a formerly incarcerated student and attended sessions to better engage and support Rising Tide Scholars as they learn to use Canvas and other educational technology. ASG Westminster Le-Jao Campus Senator Ruby Ha shared her story as a single mother and the need for increased supports for parenting students and attended workshops to bring fresh ideas back to campus in support of this population and others.

Thank you to Thalia, Kifah, and Ruby, for their passion and service in support of their fellow students!
