We're asking our tree sponsors to share their tree design inspirations with us so that we can learn more about their business. We hope you enjoy reading the Lions Club inspiration below. Their tree is covered with eye glasses and reading charts, along with other colorful decorations, and is located next to the old jail.
There are many projects pursued by various Lions Clubs, but none more important than those recognizing the value of sight. The Daleville/Fincastle Lions Club tree symbolizes the dedication we have in that area!
This year our members screened students in all but two of the Botetourt Public Schools. Starting in January 2022, we will visit daycares, preschools, and homeschool groups—all free services provided by our volunteers.
The Lions Clubs commitment to sight preservation took root in the early 1920s when Helen Keller called upon Lions Clubs International and its soon to be millions of members to “Be the Knights of the Blind”. We are still rolling, over a hundred years later!
The beginnings of the Lions KidSight USA Foundation International Board took root in the late 1990s, when the first generation of analog vision-screening technology was starting to flourish. The board was officially formed with members appointed in 2014. Since then, the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has awarded significant grant funding to start up a dozen statewide programs.
Lions KidSight USA is a nation-wide program bringing Lions clubs across the country together to ensure our children receive eye screenings and follow-up care when needed. We train and mobilize caring people to be able to easily and efficiently screen the vision health of our nation’s youngest, dearest, and most vulnerable children to help ensure they receive early academic and social development success that we all deserve — guided by the fact that 80% of a child’s learning and development requires healthy, corrected vision. In addition to maintaining a national database of annual vision screening results, all members of the local Lions Clubs take a certification test, pass a background check, and pass a health requirement to be able to go into schools, daycares, preschools, and homeschool gatherings. The Lions Club may provide financial assistance to qualifying individuals screened, if there is a need for it. The Lions Clubs support the blind by selling brooms made by the Industries for the Blind.

The Botetourt County Historic Society and Museum is showcasing a Holiday Antique Quilt Exhibit. This is a close up of one of the quilts called Crazy quilts. They were designed to display the quilters ability to embellish their work with ornate stitches on rich velvets, silks and satins during the 1800s. The embroidered initials of Ada Booze Pettigrew, Lee Booze, Alice Booze Zimmerman and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Booze as well as many of their friends are on this work of art. Botetourt County’s Museum is free and open M-Sat 10-2 and Sundays 2-4.

Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announces the Virginia Food Investment Fund (VFAIF) which is a statewide program that focuses on equity and justice in local food systems by investing in new or expanding food retailers that address food access issues in the Commonwealth. VFAIF offers grants and loans to fund the business development, construction, rehabilitation, equipment upgrades and expansion of grocery stores, small food retailers, and innovative food retail projects in historically low-income, low-access communities. The 2nd VFAIF round is open from December 1st, 2021 to February 22nd, 2022. Please review the first round of funded projects and the Equitable Food Oriented Development Brown Paper. Awards range from $5,000-$50,000.
Virginia SBDC announcement: Small Business of the Year nominations are not being accepted for the 2022 National Small Business Week Awards. These awards recognize the achievements of SBA government assisted small businesses and the contributions they have made to their communities and our nation's economy. Visit the SBA website to nominate a small business. The deadline is 1/11/22 at 3 pm.
