Suit filed against LYFT

By Ben Crump

Breaking News:

Today we announced the filing of a $50 million lawsuit against Lyft on behalf of Diamond Cannady, a mother of five who ordered a ride home from work and was instead kidnapped and sexually assaulted by the driver Lyft sent to pick her up. That driver had a prior DWI. Lyft should have known better than to employ this driver. That is not acceptable, and we are going to hold them accountable.

World Mental Health Day brings attention to mental health issues and efforts to improve mental health care. This year, the World Health Organization’s theme is “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change,” emphasizing the importance of including people with lived experience in decisions about mental health services and policies.

Glenn Heights launches “Second Saturdays” Community Marketplace

GLENN HEIGHTS, TX – The City of Glenn Heights is launching Second Saturdays, a new recurring community marketplace designed to connect residents with local entrepreneurs, small businesses, farmers, food vendors, makers, and service providers. The initiative will create a central gathering place where residents can shop locally, support small businesses, enjoy food trucks, purchase fresh produce and specialty goods, and discover businesses and talent throughout the community. “We are creating more than a market. Second Saturdays is about creating opportunity, strengthening local entrepreneurship, and giving residents another reason to spend locally and support the businesses that help our community grow,” said Mayor Sonja A. Brown.

Our Voices : When the Rules Change, Who Gets Left Behind?

By Bobby R. Henry, Sr

Texas Metro News

Black Americans lived through Jim Crow and fought to make the ballot a right. Today, barriers can be harder to recognize: a polling place moves, a registration requirement changes, or a voter learns too late that the rules are different. Voting laws have changed in recent years, and polling locations can change between elections. At the same time, artificial intelligence is moving into our workplaces and daily lives while access to digital tools remains unequal. Who will have the training and power to shape its future?

My Truth: I helped one voter!

It is working, and I’m keeping hope alive. Thank you, Mrs. R.J. I really appreciate you restoring my faith in my work. Mrs. R.J. read my column last week, where I talked about the deadline to ensure you are eligible to vote and haven’t been erased, cancelled, or disenfranchised. She said she checked on line and found her name missing from the list of registered voters. Mrs. R.J., a senior citizen, thankfully had a daughter to help her, and she also had my number, which I had listed in last week’s newspaper.

What is a Gift of Equity and What Could it Mean for Black America?

By Dr. Anthony O. Kellum

The Washington Informer https://www.washingtoninformer.com/

For generations, the conversation about Black wealth has focused on what we do not have: not enough savings, not enough access to capital, not enough homeownership and not enough inherited wealth. Those realities matter, and the disparities behind them are real, but there is another question worth asking: What are we doing with the wealth we already have? That question deserves more attention because one of the greatest barriers to homeownership is often not the ability to make a monthly mortgage payment.

Property is Power! What does Black Power mean in America Today?

By Jeremy Allen

Michigan Chronicle https://michiganchronicle.com

I have spent much of my life believing in a fairly simple version of the American promise. My parents taught me to get an education, work hard, be a good person, take care of my family and contribute something meaningful to society, and if I did those things, America would provide an opportunity to succeed. I believed them. More than that, I still believe them..

Exclusive: Meet the Visionary Fighting to Save Struggling HBCU Saint Augustine's University from Permanent Closure

The spirit of HBCU Homecoming Season is in full swing! Unfortunately that is not the case this year for Saint Augustine's University. The Raleigh, North Carolina HBCU is experiencing a myriad of challenges. Founded in 1867, Saint Augustine’s is one of the nation’s oldest HBCUs. Notable alumni include accomplished author and scholar who was born enslaved yet became the 4th Black woman to earn a PhD, Dr. Anna Julia Cooper, groundbreaking chemist and scientist, Lloyd Quarterman and comedic actress and media personality (who has hosted mainstage events at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture), Pretty Vee. However, in April of this year, the historic institution filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. According to WRAL News, court documents reveal the university owed between 50 and 100 million dollars as of April 2026. The IRS is the biggest creditor with Saint Augustine’s owing $14.4 million to them, according to the bankruptcy filing. The North Carolina Department of Revenue is owed $1.6 million, with $7 million owed to other federal agencies including the Department of Education. The university also lists $3.3 million owed to the American Trust Company, which is associated with employee retirement accounts.

Essence

https://www.essence.com/

It was seeing that word on the medical report that brought everything into perspective. My primary care physician had told me. The radiologist who read the images had told me. It’s not that I was in denial, but holding an actual copy of the results in my hands and seeing it in black and white, that’s when it became real—the “C” word had come calling. This wasn’t about an article I was editing, a subject I was interviewing or a study I was reporting on; this time it was personal..

DAILY REMEMBRANCE

Somebody woke up to a void today and is trying to find their way.

Somebody won't be able to make things right because of things they didn't get a chance to say.

Somebody is wishing they could turn back time and gaze into a loved one's eyes. Somebody's heart has been broken by death, and all they can do is cry.

Somebody has fallen to their knees with the weight of sadness today.

Somebody is learning that the only way up from here is to stay on their knees and pray.
