Some things we have found that will aid in your CSA experience:
a good recipe tool- we use allrecipes.com very often
a sharp knife
a box grater (I have used mine way more than I ever thought)
good olive oil and balsamic vinegar (garlic vinegar and apple cider would be good as well!)
An open mind! Just because you don;t like a veggie prepared one way, doesn't mean it won't be a family favorite a different way!

What can I expect at Pickup?

The first week, we will provide you with a full basket of goodies, and we ask that you return the empty basket the following week. We do offer a "swap" table if there is something you or your family does not eat; although we would like you to try everything, that's half the fun!

Our checkoff system is a little different this year for returning fall members. It will be done on our computer system so we can track more accurately the basket return process. It may seem silly and petty, but we actually spend a huge chunk of change every year on those baskets (a couple of mortgage payments worth!) If you could also do your part to keep them as clean as possible, we would really appreciate it! (don't leave in the rain, or leave with produce in them all week!) We know things happen and we're OK with that, what is just one or two baskets to you can add up to hundreds quickly if you accounted for all our members.

Our CSA Members also get a 10% discount on anything in the store, from more produce, our specialty items, honey, maple syrup, ice cream, meats and even flowers and gifts. It's our way of saying thanks for your support!
Be Healthy, inside and out.
Over the summer, Amanda decided to share the mission of a company called Beautycounter and to get safer beauty products into the hands of everyone. The decision was not as obvious at first. After dealing with infertility and IVF for a year, the main concentration was making sure I was putting good things into my body. That was an easy step- being a farmer's wife I was already conscious about ingredients, practices and labeling tricks that try to trip us up at the stores. What about what I was putting ON my body? If you dig a little further into that question, you will find there's formaldehyde in shampoos, parabens in cleansers, PEG compounds in sunscreens, and the list goes on and on and on. What can these harmful ingredients do? Some are known carcinogens, some are endocrine disruptors, others are linked to asthma- get the picture? I would love to share more with you about what Beautycounter is doing to avoid using these harmful ingredients and introduce you you to a safer alternative. Come join us for a glass of wine, an open house, and product sampling to learn more! 2 dates for your convenience- Monday October 22nd at 6:30 or Saturday October 27th at 4:00. NO RSVP necessary. Bring a friend and get a gift from me!
What's Happening at The Farm? - It's a Family Thing and your now part of ours! Thanks :-)
It's been quite the rollercoaster of a year! Let's first talk about the weather. 2018 was one of the hottest and wettest summers on record. How did The Farm fair? Lets just say it's been difficult. And as I write this, we are expecting a frost tonight as well- it's all hands on deck to pick what we can and cover our ornamental's. We lost 3 of our corn fields due to flooding- and was chased out of certain corn fields by bears, our peppers and eggplant field were about a month late, some of our winter squash is exploding (seriously!)- just to name a few things. All of these add up to huge losses for us- (think 6 digits!) But- since we can't control the weather, what do we do? Deal with it I guess- what else can we do? How does this affect you? The frost is the first biggie- some years we have been lucky enough to start our fall/winter CSA with tomatoes, peppers, eggplant etc. Not making any promises yet for week 1. Obviously we don't expect these items to make it far (if at all) into the fall program, it's just a nice bonus for many when they do. Let's talk a little about those exploding winter squash. Pretty sure I said something about this being one of the wettest years on record. Where do you think the water goes? INTO the squashes. What may look perfect on the outside may tell a different story on the inside- if you are the lucky recipient of one of these- please tell us and we will gladly replace it.

2018 has also been an exciting year for The Farm! Thanks largely in part to our CSA members and farmstand support, we have been able to acquire our own land. 45 acres in Woodbury where we plan on doing some fun ag-tourism events- look for more details in 2019!

And speaking of 2019- Mike & Amanda will be welcoming a baby boy in March! Big sister Madelyn is still in denial, but we are all excited!

BUTTERNUT SQUASH FRIES

These butternut squash fries are nutritious and tasty! They taste like sweet potato fries but better.
Can’t Get much Easier!
INGREDIENTS
1 (2 pound) butternut squash, halved and seeded
salt to taste
DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
Use a sharp knife to carefully cut away the peel from the squash. Cut the squash into sticks like French fries. Arrange squash pieces on a baking sheet and season with salt.
Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, turning the fries over halfway through baking. Fries are done when they are starting to brown on the edges and become crispy.

A fast and easy way to cut hard winter squashes!
Thank you for your support of our Farm. We are excited to begin a new season and glad you're along to watch how we GROW
