Starting Position: Garden Center Associate

Favorite Frager's Day to Day: I truly love when good customers ask for me by name or for assistance and their dogs love me, too. I have been living in the neighborhood all my life I enjoy working in the area.

How has the store changed since your time at Frager's? Gina and Marc (the current owners and CFO and CEO) have done an excellent job of keeping the spirit of the old store with more user-friendly inventory.

What’s a unique memory you have from your time at Frager’s? The earthquake where product were falling of the shelves (here's an old clip we found with footage from inside the store- you can even see William following customers out of the store!)

Our Neighbors in Capitol Hill
Featuring nonprofits and businesses that define our community
There are so many wonderful nonprofits and small businesses in the Capitol Hill community - and they need our support now more than ever. This month, you can show your support by rounding up your change to the nearest whole dollar when you check out at Frager's. At the end of the month, we'll split the funds raised between the nonprofits we're celebrating as part of our 100th Anniversary. Each organization is also the beneficiary of a month long World's Finest chocolate bar campaign in 2020.

Learn more about these great nonprofits and businesses by following our celebration on Facebook and online at www.acehardwaredc.com/pages/fragers100th. Frager's will also add a $100 credit to each featured business' store account so they can stock up on essential business supplies.
This week's nonprofits
Back On My Feet:  With chapters in 13 major cities, Back On My Feet strives to "outrun homelessness" by offering resources to local DC residents struggling to find jobs, housing, and support. With running as the foundation for their program, they aim to build self sufficiency, confidence, and accountability for the population they serve. Learn more.

Community Connections: Everyone needs someone to look out for them; Community Connections strives to be that "someone" for marginalized and disenfranchised women, men, youth, and children in the District. Their work to pair people with housing services, behavioral resources, and primary health options, with a mission true to their name. Learn more.

So Others Might Eat (SOME): Just north of Capitol Hill is the SOME headquarters: where those in need can receive medical and dental services, job training, housing assistance, and basic supplies - no questions asked. They also offer a full suite of basic need services, including showers, hot meals twice a day, and clothing.

SOME is in need of donations during these trying times- items like clothing, food, medicine, sanitizers, household cleaning supplies, bedding, and more. Here's a list with info on how you can help.
This week's businesses
East City Bookshop: Shopping at East City Bookshop makes us feel like kids in a candy store. They offer an exceptional selection of books of all genres for all ages, plus great stationary, gifts, and art supplies, and a fantastic place for folks to gather (in "normal times") to talk books or business. Owner Laurie Gillman is a local bookstore bibliophile, opening ECB in 2016 to fill the void left by Trover Books when they closed in 2009. We think she's succeeded- and in turn, created one of our favorite businesses in the District. ECB is open for shopping and browsing in store (please wear a mask and practice social distancing) and online. Are you one of those people who can't seem to own enough books? Try their book club, subscription boxes, and antiracism starter kit.

Hill's Kitchen: Owner and lifetime DC resident Leah Daniels opened Hill's Kitchen in 2016 to offer shoppers a "lively, homelike" shopping environment, where Capitol Hill neighbors can find the kitchen supplies they need without having to shop online or in the big boxes. Located in a renovated late 19th century rowhome adjacent to Eastern Market metro station, Hill's Kitchen offers a fantastic selection of curated housewares, including premium brands, giftable gadgets, and everyday essentials. One of our favorite products: state-shaped cookie cutters (we love the idea of giving someone a box of these cookies during this year's travel restricted holiday season). Visit them.

Clean Decisions: These days, it seems we can't clean enough; and frankly, it's exhausting. One thing that we love about the crew at Clean Decisions (who we have used many times over the years) are there when you need them, with landscaping, janitorial, and special event cleaning services. There's a lot to be said about their business model, too- like Frager's, they employ returning citizens looking for job opportunities that otherwise may not be available. Have a job that needs cleaning? Hire them today! Photo: Hillrag

Ice Cream Jubilee: We LOVE Ice Cream Jubilee; with locations close to Frager's and our sister store Logan Hardware in Logan Circle, our staff has spent many a lunch break gathered around nearby tables, socializing over a few scoops. The story behind the business is inspiring- what started as a passion hobby for owner Victoria morphed into a full fledged business just four years after she started mixing flavors in her kitchen. Place an order for pickup online- or, send your favorite flavors to a friend across the country!
