PASTOR'S LETTER

Subheading

Dear Friends in Christ,

Welcome to Parish Family #36! I am pleased and grateful to have been named Pastor of this new parish family in north Tacoma and Vashon Island. It provides me the gift of a "second term" at Saint Patrick, Holy Cross, and our school. It also gives me the opportunity to come to know and serve a whole new community of people at Saint John Vianney. I am also happy that Fr. David Mayovsky will be joining me in ministry as Parochial Vicar and that he is the priest who is presently serving the island community. We both bring a wealth of knowledge, familiarity, and service to this local Church, and I think that will be a plus in many ways.

Beginning July 1, the Partners in the Gospel process has us entering into Phase 1, Welcoming. This phase is described as follows: "Parishioners encounter one another in Christ, getting to know one another, with open minds and hearts." When I first saw that description, I was immediately reminded of Chapter 4 of the Book of Acts, which says:

"The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. With great power, the Apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all."

Acts 4:32-33

In the months ahead, as we enter into the welcoming phase, I would ask that we each pray for a greater outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the same outpouring that was given and received by the early Church as recorded in the Book of Acts. We are all called to be of "one heart and mind" as disciples of the Lord Jesus. This is a wonderful fruit of the Holy Spirit: the community is unified and with great power, we can witness the resurrection of the Lord Jesus to a world in much need of that witness. On the other hand, when there is dis-unity, dissension, division, and negativity, that is evidence of the evil one who causes chaos rather than community, division rather than unity. Friends, that is not for us. Let's go forward calling upon God's grace to be abundant for us in the months ahead as we come to know each other in building up our new parish family!

Blessings,

Fr. David Mulholland

Pastor

A LETTER from FR. MAYOVSKY

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we get to know each other and our faith communities in the coming year, by way of introduction, I am very grateful to be a part of Family #36. I am the youngest of four siblings and a native of Western Washington. I was born in Seattle and grew up on Mercer Island and St. Monica Parish. I have been a priest of our Archdiocese for 27 years, most recently serving as pastor of St. John Vianney.

I am Slovak and very proud of my Slavic heritage and ancestry. I love reading and studying Church history, the Church Fathers, and Eastern (Byzantine) Christianity. I also love to walk, write, sing, and bake (especially chocolate chip cookies) and share them with others.

I am very much looking forward to assist Father David and offer what gifts I have to help us all grow together in God’s unity, love, and peace. I look forward to pray with you and get to know you in the coming months.

Alleluia!

Fr. David Mayovsky

Last weekend, parish families learned about the pastoral changes starting on July 1, 2024. Given the large number of priests who will serve a different parish family, these assignments are unlike any in our history. Archbishop Etienne wrote a letter to the People of God expressing his gratitude and encouragement. Read the Archbishop's letter.

Official appointments, including pastors, parochial vicars, and other assignments, were made after several months of consultation with priests, deacons, staff, and parishioners from around the archdiocese. View appointments in Flipbook or PDF format.

ALWAYS scroll to the bottom of The Cornerstone; you might need to click view the entire message if your email provider clipped it or view it as a webpage in the browser to stay informed about important news, events, and programs. You'll know you've reached the end when you see our photo highlight.

COMING UP

NOVENA PRAYER

Novena for the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Pray the Novena for the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS). This novena was first prayed in the spring of 2002 during the discernment process for beginning the Atrium at Saint Michael Parish in Olympia, Washington. Without planning it that way, the novena ended on Good Shepherd Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Easter. Since then, it has been offered each year for the needs of this ministry, always ending on Good Shepherd Sunday.

This year, the novena begins on April 13 and ends on April 21. We pray with particular gratitude for this work as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of its beginning, the 40th anniversary of CGSUSA, and the 10th anniversary of the PNW Sheepfold Consortium.

CGS is an approach to faith formation in which children between the ages of 3 and 12 are formed in the Catholic faith in a sacred space called the atrium.

To learn more about CGS at Saint Patrick Church, visit the atrium, serve or train as a catechist, email Kim Ward, CGS Coordinator, or call 253-274-4108.

For more information, visit the national CGS USA Association and the local consortium website, The Sheepfold.

Planning long before an urgent need ensures arrangements in harmony with your faith. Pre-planning allows family members to make calm, levelheaded decisions instead of emotionally charged decisions while grieving a significant loss. The Church teaches us that the custom of burying the bodies of the dead should be observed, even for those who choose cremation.

Please stop by the Associated Catholic Cementaries table to ask questions, gather information, and sign up for a 15% discount being offered to our parishioners this month.

ADVOCACY & OUTREACH

The Washington State Catholic Conference (WSCC) can help you prepare for the upcoming election season. In anticipation of the many questions you may have while discerning your votes, the WSCC offers the following guidance and reminders:

  1. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops document Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship is the only approved Catholic voting guide recognizing that how each of us votes is a matter of faith formation and individual conscience. As a church, we can help guide conscience formation but cannot tell you for whom to vote.
  2. The Catholic Church is not Democratic, Republican, or any other party. We are Catholic, and no party platform completely reflects our teachings. Therefore, we must make our voting choices thoughtfully, prayerfully, and with sufficient research using credible sources.
  3. The Catholic Church encourages people to vote and provides education on Church teachings regarding the role of government, our moral responsibility to vote, and how we form our consciences for voting in a way consistent with our faith.
  4. We are a church of both/and. Therefore, a voter can seek to protect the unborn in their voting choice and seek to ensure pregnant women, regardless of legal status, have access to healthcare, childcare, safe housing, and clean water that they need for a healthy and safe pregnancy and to raise children. We can vote to protect the environment and vote against policies that put the burden of doing so on the backs of the poorest in our state. We can lift up the image and likeness of Christ in every person and the complementarity and differences between male and female genders while holding firm to our teaching that protects every individual from discrimination in essentials such as housing.
