The Warning applies to areas near and east of the DFW Metroplex (Kaufman service area), while the Advisory covers western North Texas and northern Central Texas (Athens service area). A mix of snow and sleet up to 2 inches and ice up to a tenth of an inch is anticipated in the Advisory area. Need to report an outage?

When the power goes out, we typically anticipate that electricity will be restored within a few hours. However, a significant storm can lead to prolonged outages. TVEC linemen, mutual aid teams, contractors, and right-of-way crews dedicate long hours of hard work to restore service to as many members as quickly as possible. We prioritize safety while striving for maximum efficiency.

Lives Are On The Line

Help keep our lineworkers safe. When you see a utility vehicle on the side of the road with its lights flashing, be sure to move over a lane. If you can’t, slow down by twenty miles per hour.

Moving over or slowing down gives lineworkers the safe environment they need to complete their jobs for you and other members. So mind the flashing lights, it’s courteous—and it’s the law.

Be safe. Drive smart.

It's the Law!

Generator Safety - Your Life Could Depend On It

Generators are a handy addition to any household and can certainly make life a little easier during power outages, but they pose safety risks, including electrical hazards and exposure to carbon monoxide.

Location

Keep the generator outdoors at least 10–25 feet away from your home, facing away from doors, windows, and vents. Don't use a generator in a house, basement, crawl space, or garage, even if the door is open.

Fuel

Store fuel in properly labeled, non-glass safety containers outside living areas. Don't store fuel near a fuel-burning appliance. Before refueling, turn off the generator and let it cool down.

Connections

Use heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords that are free of damage and have all three prongs. Don't connect the generator directly to your home's power supply.

Carbon monoxide

Install battery-powered carbon monoxide alarms inside your home and test them regularly. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, so you won't know if it's there.

Maintenance

Inspect the generator regularly and contact the manufacturer for parts needing repair or replacement.

Other safety tips

Keep children away from generators at all times. Operate the generator only on level surfaces. Allow at least five feet of clearance on all sides of the generator when operating.

Travel Safely If You Get On The Roads

A mix of winter precipitation will occur on Thursday, which could have some travel impacts across service territories. Make sure to be flexible with travel plans and refer to these safety tips if you have to get on the road.

The Four P's of Winter Weather Safety

With temperatures expected to drop into the mid-to-low 20s, it is a good time to refresh on the four P's. If you have any elderly family or neighbors, call or visit them and make sure they are warm. You should create a plan to ensure they are safe including having extra blankets or checking on their thermostat. If they use a space heater, make sure it does not run overnight.

Storm Response Training

In December, TVEC employees participated in an Incident Command System training exercise led by Tempest Energy, LLC that simulated a large-scale storm response. Teams had to prepare plans, schedule operations, and adjust on the spot for unexpected situations while maintaining efficiency, communication, and safety. Training for potential natural disasters is just one of the ways we keep our skills sharp.
