August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM)! This month is held to recognize the importance of immunizations and vaccines. Immunizations are one of the most cost-effective public health interventions, averting an estimated 4.4 million deaths yearly (UNICEF).

Did you know that rural U.S. residents, when compared to urban residents, have more concerns regarding safety, long-term side effects, effectiveness, and necessity of vaccines (CDC 2023)? One way to improve vaccine and immunization confidence is through education and outreach that addresses just what vaccines do and why they're important for families and for farm animals.

For farmers and agricultural workers, one critical but sometimes overlooked vaccine is the tetanus vaccine. Tetanus bacteria are commonly found in soil, dust, and manure - which means that cuts, scrapes, or puncture wounds sustained during farm work can quickly become serious. Unlike many infections, tetanus can’t be spread person-to-person; it’s caught from the environment, so vaccination is the only reliable protection. Staying up to date on tetanus boosters (every 10 years) is a simple and highly effective way to safeguard your health and keep you working safely.

FREE 1-Hour Course: Prevent, Diagnose, Manage: Alpha-gal Syndrome in Rural Patients

Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is an emerging public health issue in the United States, with reported cases increasing each year. Many healthcare professionals have limited or no familiarity with the condition, making diagnosis and management particularly challenging due to the complex nature of AGS.

To address this gap, AgriSafe has developed a one-hour training module designed to enhance healthcare providers' knowledge of AGS. The training covers the causes, identification, diagnosis, management, and prevention of the syndrome.

Continuing Medical Education: This activity has been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

Nursing Continuing Professional Development: This nursing continuing professional development activity was approved by the Midwest Multistate Division, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. In order to obtain nursing contact hours, you must participate in the entire program and complete the evaluation.

Virginia Farm Bureau - Isle of Wight County Annual Meeting 2025 (Smithfield, VA - August 11, 2025)

AgriSafe's Health Communications Officer, Laura Siegel, and AgriSafe's Health Communications Specialist, Vanessa Martinez, attended the Virginia Farm Bureau's Isle of Wight County's Annual Meeting on Monday August 11th in Smithfield, VA. Laura was grateful for the opportunity to present on farm stress and mental health resources to almost 200 attendees.

Both Laura and Vanessa got the opportunity to connect with farmers from Virginia's Coastal Region, which was a great learning experience, since they are both situated in the Shenandoah Valley. Despite the commodity differences between the mountains and the coast, the messages on agricultural stress, health, and safety remain relevant.

Mandela Washington Fellowship Project - AgriSafe Training for Nigerian Healthcare Workers (Virtual - August 11, 2025)



AgriSafe Network partnered with Norina Farms to provide a 1-hour training on agricultural reproductive health and sleep deprivation to Nigerian healthcare workers. Dr. Tara Haskins and Laura Siegel worked with Gift Udoh to arrange the training, under the Mandela Washington Fellowship. There was a turnout of around 25 attendees, who were engaged and had great discussions.

Did you know that agricultural workers are at increased risk for on-the-job injuries? While some injuries might be minor, some can be life-threatening - but, if first aid is given within the first hour post-injury, the chance of survival exponentially increases. But what about when EMS is far away?

Well, anyone can help to save a life! In this episode of Talking Total Farmer Health, our host Linda Emanuel speaks with guest Robby Rhembrandt about important farm first aid kit items as well as what you can do on the farm in the event of a traumatic injury, and how you can help someone stay stable until EMS arrives.

Preventing Zoonosis Learning Module

AgriSafe’s Invest in Your Health (IYH) program offers a series of free, ready-to-use curricula designed for agricultural educators, 4-H and FFA mentors, and young producers ages 14–23. With seven curricula and six engaging modules currently available, IYH helps prepare the next generation of agricultural leaders to make informed health and safety choices.



The newest addition to the series, the Preventing Zoonosis Learning Module, focuses on understanding and preventing diseases that can pass from animals to humans, especially in agricultural settings. This 30-minute e-learning experience is tailored for students, offering practical knowledge and tools to protect themselves, their animals, and their communities.

After a natural disaster, going home is a priority for many people. However, homes and other structures can be affected by natural disasters and may need some care, like cleaning or rebuilding, before they are safe to live in. 

Some things to look out for when returning home after a disaster include:

• Mold
• Water damage 
• Structural damage 
• Damaged power lines 
• Standing sewage or wastewater 

If your home is damaged after a disaster, be sure to get it checked by a building inspector before entering. After that, cleanup will be important. While cleaning up, it is important to wear the proper protective equipment (PPE), which includes full-length clothing, tall close-toed shoes, long socks, hair tied back, and masks.

For mold, it’s important to disinfect and air out the area while wearing the proper PPE, including full-length clothes and a mask. Airing out the area includes opening the windows and using fans - even if there is not visible water damage, moisture in the air can cause mold growth. 

The water in your home may not be safe to drink, so it is important to check the quality of your water. If you do not have other drinking water options available, make sure to boil it before use. For more information, visit the CDC's page on How to Make Sure Your Water is Safe.

The 98th National FFA Convention and Expo will take place October 29 – November 1, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana. This inspiring event will bring together hundreds of thousands of FFA members from chapters across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
