Yessenia will begin her higher education career at Montclair State University, pursuing her ambition to become a speech pathologist.

Joana has matriculated at Seton Hall University, where she will study nursing.

Roselyn will attend Fairleigh Dickinson University to study criminal justice.

Alyssa has committed to The College of New Jersey, studying to become a psychologist.

Dr. Enmanuel Mercedes, Alyssa Tentle, Roselyn Muñoz, Jacqueline Arteaga, Yessenia Garcia,

Dean Ashley Castiglia.

The joyous celebration featured words of welcome and wisdom from guest speakers Ashley Castiglia (Dean of Admissions at PCCC) and Enmanuel Mercedes, Ph.D. (President of the Latino Mental Health Association of New Jersey).

Our College Student Leaders excitedly shared their congratulations for each of their graduating mentees, and we thanked MTB's 2022-23 Social Work Intern, Ayana Goodwin, for her wonderful work throughout the year.

Words of Advice

We asked our Leaders to share some helpful tips for our graduates as they prepare to begin college. Here's what they had to say:

Get involved!

Talk to new people, make friends, interact with professors, and find out what you enjoy doing.

Surround yourself with people who share your interests. These bonds will help you open doors to make new connections and offer you networking opportunities.

Take advantage of all the resources available on campus. Use the writing center and other tutoring services. They’re free and they’re there to help you.

Going to office hours is amazing for grasping the concepts and preparing for assignments/exams.

Plan out your week using apps like Google Calendar. You can also use your MTB calendar!

Think small picture vs big picture. Write down major deadlines and exam days on the calendar and when you want to start preparing for them. Organize your responsibilities while also making sure you make time for yourself. Prioritize your mental health!!

If you decide to switch majors/minors, don’t feel embarrassed! Embrace any changes made along the way. It’s perfectly fine to find your calling later on or take a different path.

Have fun and enjoy your first year at college!! Consider going to school-wide events and activities. Don’t overwhelm yourself and burnout before the finish line because remember in the end, it's a marathon not a sprint.

QuestBridge Scholar

Jailene has been selected as a QuestBridge College Prep Scholar! She is currently a high school junior at Passaic Preparatory Academy and is considering a career in nursing.

As a College Prep Scholar, Jailene and a family member have been invited to attend a college summer program at Northwestern, all expenses paid. She will have campus visit opportunities, specialized guidance for the college application process, and other support for the college admissions journey.

Jailene’s success in this endeavor is thanks in part to her More Than Bootstraps College Student Leader, Michelle. Michelle was a College Prep Scholar herself and is a Questbridge Scholar. This summer, Michelle will help lead the college summer program for College Prep Scholars at her home institution, Emory University.
