A Special Message From The White House Historical Association: | |
|
Many are surprised to learn that the cost of preserving and maintaining the historic furnishings and art within the White House Collection isn't covered entirely by public money or by a federally funded agency.
In fact, the funds to help protect the Executive Mansion’s collection, preserve its interiors, and ensure public access to its living history are extensively supported by donations to the White House Historical Association.
| |
We are a private, nonprofit organization established by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in 1961. With your support, we are able to protect, preserve, and provide access to the White House’s public rooms and decorative arts collection, educational resources and publications, and the acquisition of historic objects and art for the White House’s permanent collection.
Your support also helps us advance our academic goals through education, scholarship, and research. The David M. Rubenstein Center for White House History is the Association’s research and educational hub that serves hundreds of thousands of individuals annually. The Center offers content about the history of the Executive Mansion, those who have lived and worked there, as well as its traditions and complex role as a national symbol. The Center works to spread learning through a variety of means, including:
- Professional educational programs like the White House History Teacher Institute.
- Classroom Resource Packets and activities offered free on the Association’s website.
-
Digital programs such as White House History Live, History Happy Hour, and the White House 1600 Sessions podcast.
- The Digital Library, which houses thousands of images, documents, and recordings.
- Scholarship and research projects to grow our understanding of White House history through graduate fellowships and projects like Slavery in the President’s Neighborhood.

Since our founding, we’ve relied exclusively on the generosity of our supporters. More than 60 years later, this partnership is as important as ever as we work to protect, preserve, and provide public access to the “people’s house.”
