Honoring Service, Sacrifice, and Community
Charleston Habitat for Humanity was proud to bring together community members, volunteers, first responders, and AmeriCorps alumni to honor those who we lost on 9/11.
The morning began with a warm welcome from Lynn Bowley, CEO of Charleston Habitat for Humanity, who reminded all present that, while we reflect on the tragedy of September 11th, we also celebrate the strength and resilience that emerges when communities unite in purpose.
The Presentation of Colors by the St. John’s High School ROTC was a beautiful tribute and a solemn reminder of the impact of that day. It was followed by moving remarks from Charleston County Councilman Brantley Moody, who spoke on behalf of the county in recognizing the continued sacrifices made by service members, first responders, and the brave men and women of our country.
At 8:46 AM, all attendees paused for a moment of silence, marking the time of the first impact on September 11, 2001—a reminder of the lives lost and the lives forever changed.
Local leaders also offered words of reflection and solidarity. Chief Charles G. Lamoreaux of the St. Andrews Fire Department and Christie Holderness, District Manager of the St. Andrews Public Service District, each shared moving tributes to the first responders and United States citizens who acted with selflessness and courage on that fateful day and every day since.
Following these tributes, volunteers began the day’s construction project, repairing a home for future Charleston Habitat homeowner Leslie and her family, providing not just shelter, but hope and stability.
The day closed with a Reflection & Community Gathering. Participants created tribute messages of remembrance and hope, decorating memory rocks symbolizing the enduring legacy of service and community resilience.
The day was more than a day of remembrance—it was a day of purpose, of action, and of gratitude.
