Welcome to this issue of the Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce Newsletter! This newsletter goes out to more than 2000 individual emails and is posted on our   facebook  page each week. It is designed to keep you informed of the latest info from your local Chamber of Commerce. Feel free to forward this newsletter to someone who should be a member or is interested in information about what is going on in the Cheboygan Area. April Business After Hours with a Michigan Top 50 Business to Watch
Join us for a Business After Hours.  Thursday April 18th from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at Cheboygan Brewing Company.  This month's After Hours is being hosted by

Mother Nature's Remedies - Member of the Month
We have started a new program at the Chamber. We are randomly selecting one business or organization per month to be featured as our member of the month. We are partnering with  Lindsey Vork Photography  on this project and think it is highlighting the winners very well.... Please check out our April Member of the Month,  Mother Nature's Remedies !

Spring Membership Drive

Gaylord Job Fair a Big Draw for Employers and Job Seekers
On Saturday, April 6th, over 170 job seekers attended the Michigan Works! Gaylord Job Fair held at the Gaylord Intermediate School gymnasium.

Over 40 local businesses were represented hoping to fill 100s of jobs. Industries included tourism, retail, hospitality, food service, transportation, health care, general labor, public safety, and more, offering part-time, seasonal, and full-time opportunities.

Overall, job seeker feedback was very positive, with attendees stating the event offered a variety of employers and opportunities.

“The fair was very helpful in looking for myself and two other family members who were not able to attend,” said Sandy B.

“It was fantastic!” agreed job seeker Nevada Dudd. “A lot of friendly people and a great way to meet lots of employers.”

McLaren Northern Michigan 29th Annual Children’s Health Fair
Petoskey, MI – For 29 years, northern Michigan community agencies have been participating in the McLaren Northern Michigan Children’s Health Fair. Taking place in April, the “Month of the Young Child,” this free education focuses on events and activities for newborns to 12 year olds.

Providing a fun family atmosphere, the Children’s Health Fair is an educational environment where parents can learn best practices to keep children healthy and safe.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 13 at the Petoskey Middle School, located at 801 Northmen Drive, off of Mitchell Street in Petoskey. The event will have many activities for parents and children, including:

Action Hero Fun Run – held outside. Bring a “hero” cape (weather permitting)
Fire engine and helicopter tours (weather permitting)
Face Painting...

Airport After Hours Set for April 24, 2019!

Don’t miss the 16 th Annual Airport After Hours to be held Wed. April 24 th , 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Pellston Regional Airport . One lucky attendee will win a $500 gift card to Delta Airlines. Many of the sponsors will be offering prizes as well. The event will feature great food by Hoppies Landing and a cash bar. The cost to attend is just $7.00/person. Because this is a fund-raising event for the Air Service Task Force, punch cards or comp passes from area chambers will not be accepted. This is a multi-chamber networking event promoted by the chambers of commerce and visitors bureaus from St. Ignace, Mackinac Island, Mackinaw City, Cheboygan, Indian River, Petoskey, and Harbor Springs.

With Special Performance: Trout Fishing in America

Join us to welcome four time Grammy award nominees Trout Fishing in America to Access to the Arts at The  Cheboygan Opera House . The long-standing partnership of Keith Grimwood and Ezra Idlet blend seamlessly in a way that has captured the imagination (and hearts) of audiences of all ages for over four decades. The band will perform on April 17th and 18th at 10am and 1pm for free for all interested children, schools, and homeschoolers. Our goal is to bring education in the arts to young artists. Teachers should contact our Assistant Administrator, Owen Goslin, to schedule their classes, or to make any inquiries regarding the program at 231-627-5432. This event has been made possible for the last 25 years by  Citizens National Bank . Additional thanks go to  mBank . The Michigan Council for Culture and the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts support all of the children's programming at the Opera House. 
Michigan Works! to Hold Huge Job Fair in Mackinaw City
Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium, in partnership with the Village of Mackinaw City and the Mackinaw City Chamber of Commerce, is hosting the Straits Area Regional Job Fair this Saturday, April 13 from 11am-1pm at the Mackinaw City Recreational Center . This will be the Consortium's largest Job Fair in recent years, with over 80 employers on-site excited to meet face-to-face with job seekers.

Hundreds of jobs are available, including seasonal, full-time and part-time. Many employers will even be hiring on-the-spot! You could even live a summer on Mackinac Island! High school and college students are strongly encouraged to attend and line up their summer job before school is out.

Whether you're interested in a career change or perhaps just a summer job, these job fairs are great opportunities to network and engage with a variety of employers in one location. All fairs are open to the public and there is no cost to attend. Bring copies of your up-to-date resume and dress prepared to interview. Please, no children, pets, or food/beverages allowed.

McLaren Northern Michigan Awarded 5-Star Hospital Rating from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
Petoskey, MI – The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that McLaren Northern Michigan has been awarded a 5-star rating, the highest rating possible for quality and safety. McLaren Northern Michigan has received a 5-star rating consecutively since the first hospital Star Ratings began in 2016.

A total of 3,725 hospitals nationwide were included in the analysis, which ranked hospitals from one to five stars based on distinct measures broken down into 7 categories, including mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care, and efficient use of medical imaging. A 5-star rating places McLaren Northern Michigan in the top 7.9% of hospitals in the country.

“McLaren Northern Michigan is dedicated to providing quality patient care and high customer satisfaction,” stated Jennifer Woods, MSN, RN, Interim CEO of McLaren Northern Michigan.

Earth Week Plus Expo
The Trails Council  will be represented on  Saturday, April 13 at Cheboygan High School

Stop at the tent by the Expo entry door to find out about the amazing variety of trails in Cheboygan County. Bring your bike to one of three Bike Maintenance Clinics (at 11:00, 12:00, or 1:00), or simply attend and learn more about the basics of maintaining a bicycle. Jim Conboy and Bill Prall will be on hand to answer your questions about cycling, bike touring, bike maintenance, and everything trail-related. 

Expo hours are 10 am to 1:45 pm.
McLaren Northern Michigan State of Michigan Grants $1 Million to Hospital Building Project
The State of Michigan awarded   McLaren Northern Michigan  a $1 million grant in support of the Building the Future of Health Care expansion project at the Petoskey Campus. 

The project involves building a 170,000 square foot wing with 92 new private patient rooms, including a new Intensive Care Unit and Cardiovascular Unit, as well as a new surgery suite. In addition, the project involves converting many of the current doubleoccupancy patient rooms to private rooms and improving wayfinding throughout the Petoskey Campus. 

This past July, when McLaren Northern Michigan broke ground for the new wing, local State Representative and Michigan House Speaker, Lee Chatfield, along with other community officials, joined to celebrate the monumental project.

Citizens National Bank Sponsors Access to the Arts
The  Cheboygan Area Arts Council  has invited schoolchildren to enjoy a show at the Opera House for over 20 years and has relied on  Citizens National Bank  throughout those years to sponsor the program. 

Typically, over 2000 children from a broad area across northern Michigan have been bused to the Opera House to delight in show that is geared especially towards them. This year the CAAC is hosting the nationally known folk duo "Trout Fishing in America." This child friendly show...

North Central Michigan College  welcomes Chelsea Platte as its new executive director for the NCMC Foundation. 

Ms. Platte will join the College on Monday, April 8. She will be replacing Dr. Lisa Watson who left in late January. Ms. Platte is currently serving as the Leadership Giving Officer at Munson Healthcare Foundations, Charlevoix. She assumed this post in 2017 following the acquisition of the Charlevoix Hospital by the Munson Health System. For nearly four years prior, she served as Executive Director of the Charlevoix Area Hospital Foundation where she successfully launched a multi-million dollar capital campaign while maintaining annual fundraising goals, and increased the success of their signature gala, Holly Daze.

Bergman Announces 2019 Congressional Art Competition 
Each spring, the Congressional Institute and participating Members of Congress sponsor An Artistic Discovery, a nationwide high school visual art competition that recognizes and encourages artistic talent in each congressional district. Since the pilot competition in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. 

The annual Art Competition is open to all high school students currently living in the First District. The winning submission will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year and viewed by visitors and dignitaries from all over the world. 

Each student must submit the Student Release Form with his or her entry. 

All entries for the Congressional Art Competition must be submitted to my Marquette or Traverse City offices by 5:00 p.m. on May 3, 2019.
