So
For the past few days the sky has had an orange hue. It's not overcast - it's smoke. And while fire may be a normal part of nature in some places, it's always devastating to hear of evacuation notices and property losses. In our local area, the Sunset Fire has consumed over 3,000 acres and continues to burn, although we are happy to see containment reach 52%. Through all of this uncertainty, it is comforting to know that the firefighters on the job are persistent and dedicated. We are so grateful for their exhaustive efforts and the risk they face in their line of duty. Their work, not only protects the landscapes we love, but brings comfort to those in and near the fire.

A YEAR IN REVIEW
The KLT 2024 Annual Report Card has arrived. Our goal is to be brief but also all encompassing so you can get a snapshot of the year's impactful projects and then get back outside. Our hope is that you see your part in this work we are doing together as we care for the lands and people of the Kaniksu Region, today, tomorrow, and forever.

KEEP ON TRUCKING
I'm sure you can imagine that our work involves a lot of heavy lifting, much of which can't be done with muscle power alone. So when Idagon offered us one of their retired work trucks, we jumped at the chance. This new-to-us GMC will leverage the conservation work we do together in remarkable ways. Next time you see the Idagon crew, give them a fist bump and a thank you.

DRY AS DIRT
It may be a simple thing, but just getting ourselves outside has many unexpected benefits. A study Katie recently read said a 90 minute walk in nature can turn that frown upside down, and then this weekend, she experienced that in person. READ IT HERE

AUGUST IS IDAHO FARMER'S MARKET MONTH
Shopping at the Farmer's Market is a good conservation move. When you do, you’re helping keep our farms, fields, and open spaces alive and thriving. Buying local food means shorter trips from farm to table, which cuts down on pollution and transportation costs and keeps more money right here in our community. It also helps farmers stay on their land, protecting the places that grow our food and give Idaho its unique character. Every tomato, loaf of bread, or bundle of flowers you buy is a little investment in a stronger, healthier, more connected community. See you on Wednesday or Saturday at the market!

AUGUST IS NATIONAL BROWNIES FOR LUNCH MONTH
... and National Catfish Month, Happiness Happens Month, Dog Month, Make A Will Month - and another 20 more national observances. I can't speak for the purpose of a catfish month, but Make A Will Month is easier to understand. If writing your will hasn't been top-of-mind until now, this is a good time to get it out of the way. Our partners at FreeWill make it easy and FREE. In just a few easy steps you can get it done before August 31st. They even help you set aside a little something for causes that are important to you. See how it's done HERE.
Mark this off of your list and reward yourself with a brownie.

We love engaging with you wherever we meet up. And, that includes those times when we show up in your social media feeds. However, we did some soul-searching about the amount of time we spend curating posts, Stories, Reels, Threads, and whatever the next new thing brings. And, it occurred to us that by doing that, we are just filling your feeds, keeping you on your device instead of outside. Well, that's not who we are, is it?! So, we made the daring decision to pull back on our social media communications.
We are not going dark.
We are posting less and engaging more. As you connect with the amazing natural landscapes and people of our region, remember to tag us. Your time spent on the trails and in nature is the most meaningful way we connect.

"Keep close to nature's heart and break clear away once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean."
