Latin America and The Caribbean Climate Week Demands Urgent and Bold Climate Action
The second regional Climate Week of the year closed on 23 August in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, and welcomed a versatile panel of about 4,000 participants, from government ministers to senior representatives of multilateral agencies to non-governmental organizations.

In particular, participants included Ricardo Salles, Minister of Environment of Brazil, Antônio Carlos Magalhães Neto, Mayor of Salvador da Bahia, Rabino Sergio Bergman, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of Argentina, the Environment Minister of the Environment of Chile and President-designate of the UN Climate Change Conference COP 25 in Chile this year, Carolina Schmidt, and UN Secretary-General Special Envoy for the Climate Action Summit, Ambassador Luis Alfonso de Alba.

This group of eminent leaders catalysed a wide regional and sectoral discussion around climate action, with a view to boosting and demonstrating increased climate ambition in the region.

The outcomes of the week were presented at the closing of the meeting and, in addition to those gathered at the Africa Climate Week in March, will contribute to building momentum towards the UN Secretary General’s Climate Action Summit to take place in September in New York and the annual Climate Change Conference COP 25 in December, in Santiago de Chile.

Call to Join the Mitigation Coalition to Step-up Ambition for September Climate Action Summit
The Government of Chile has been asked by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres to lead the coalition “Mitigation strategy” of the Summit. Minister of Environment and President designate of COP 25 Carolina Schmidt is being supported by UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa, and UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner, to undertake this critical task towards a future that is cleaner, healthier and safer for all people.

The Government of Chile issued a communique to rally ambition in the lead up to the Summit.

Minister Schmidt – in her role as Minister of Environment for Chile and President designate of COP 25 – is mobilizing actors that represent the groundswell determination to radically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, modernize our societies and prevent a climate catastrophe.

Minister Schmidt has also asked Gonzalo Munoz, High-Level Climate Action Champion from Chile, to help her in this work by engaging with non-State actors, both ahead of the Summit and in the lead-up to COP 25.
Join us at the Asia-Pacific Climate Week
Asia-Pacific Climate Week will take place from 2 to 6 September 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand. The event will add to building momentum towards the UN Secretary General’s Climate Action Summit, work already started by the Africa Climate Week held in March in Ghana, and the Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week held in Brazil. These outcomes will also be key to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 25) that will take place in December in Santiago, Chile.

The event will showcase on-the-ground examples of climate solutions in the region that are cutting emissions and helping communities adapt to the changing climate.

A detailed agenda is posted on the Regional Climate Weeks website , where more information is also available. To join us, please register for the event here .
