SC Labor Force Participation Shrinks in July
According to monthly data released by the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW), the estimated number of South Carolinians working in July decreased by roughly 4,500 individuals which is the largest single month decrease since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the total number of individuals employed is still higher by nearly 31,000 individuals from July 2021 levels.
The state’s unemployment percentage remained roughly unchanged at 3.2% and employers added an additional 16,000 jobs, showing a tight labor market still exists in the state. Industries with the largest fluctuation of job additions/subtractions were education and health services which added roughly 4,100 jobs in July and manufacturing which saw a decrease of roughly 2,000 jobs during that same period. Still, there are roughly 114,500 open jobs in South Carolina.
