Dear Members and Friends:
The People Have Clicked – Burnout Is Real
Apparently, we struck a nerve—because clicks don’t lie. Our recent article on burnout lit up the charts. If you haven’t read it yet, don’t worry—you still can. It’s posted on our website and featured on the homepage. Go give it a read. Your brain (and maybe your sanity) will thank you.
Let’s talk burnout. This year hasn’t exactly rolled in with grace—it’s been more of a bumpy ride. Uncertainty and constant change are swirling around us. Now, change can be good. It keeps us growing. But not all change feels good—and that’s where resilience comes in.
Employers, this is your cue. Take a pulse check on your teams. Really—do it. In times like these, when burnout is high and stability feels like a luxury, your staff needs to feel seen and supported. Losing great people costs more than you think—so act before you have to react.
Individuals, if you’re feeling the drag, it might be time for a self-check-in. We’re here to support you with resources to help you realign, reset, and return to a healthier, more balanced work life.
Speaking of realignment—we have an upcoming program that may just give you the “aha” moment you need. It digs into why your brain’s dominant mode may be the underlying reason for burnout—or even tension in a key relationship. You’ll walk away with a better understanding of your strengths and blind spots. Seating is limited, and registration is open—jump on it before it’s gone!
We’ve also got more great programming on the way. Our Regional Panel is coming up—don’t miss it! We’re bringing together area leaders to share what’s happening in their corner of the St. Louis region (channeling our inner Al Roker here) and what’s on the horizon. It’s your mid-year outlook in one power-packed session.
And yes, it’s already time to Save the Date for our Clay Shoot! We’re back at Top Gun, which was a huge hit last year. Gorgeous setting, amazing amenities—what’s not to love? We’re expecting an even quicker sellout this year, especially with the possibility of 5-person teams and side-by-sides to keep things moving. Oh—and did I mention two sessions? Let’s just say we’re fired up. (Pun fully intended.)
In the meantime, have a productive, meaningful week. Take a breath, clear your head, and do something that brings you joy. You’ve earned it.
Ps. Don’t forget to download our APP! And log into our InfoHub. We’ve reminded you because we still get asked for contact information and it’s in the InfoHub. You can still ask but you already have access. AND did you sign up for my LinkedIn training? Suggest that your co-workers sign up?
My best,
Kelly

Oculus Inc. and Horner & Shifrin Deliver Two New Healthcare Facilities for Springfield’s Senior Community
Two new healthcare clinics have officially opened in Springfield, designed specifically to serve the area’s growing senior population. The 65 Prime+ by Mercy Primary Care clinics were brought to life through the combined efforts of Oculus Inc. and Horner & Shifrin, Inc., blending architectural innovation with precise engineering to create spaces tailored for patients aged 65 and older.
Oculus Inc. led the architectural and interior design for the clinics, focusing on creating environments that promote comfort, accessibility, and wellness. From enhanced lighting and intuitive layouts to warm, inviting finishes, every design decision was made with the patient experience in mind. The goal was to ensure that seniors feel at ease navigating the spaces, while also encouraging engagement in health and wellness activities.
Supporting this vision, Horner & Shifrin provided the critical engineering expertise to bring the facilities’ infrastructure to life, ensuring the clinics meet modern healthcare standards while remaining flexible for future needs.
The resulting clinics offer more than just medical appointments—they are thoughtfully designed hubs for education, support, and community-centered wellness. This project exemplifies how strategic design, and engineering can work together to shape healthcare spaces that are both functional and deeply human-centered.
Oculus Inc. and Horner & Shifrin are proud to contribute to the infrastructure that supports healthier communities and look forward to seeing the positive impact these new clinics will have on Springfield’s seniors.
Congratulations to Mercy, Oculus Inc., Horner & Shifrin, and all project partners on the successful completion of these impactful clinics—an achievement that reflects true collaboration and a shared commitment to community health.

Flying Forward: MidAmerica St. Louis Airport Expansion Takes Off with New General Aviation Facility
Construction is steadily advancing at MidAmerica St. Louis Airport, where Holland Construction Services is leading the expansion with the development of a new 25,277-square-foot General Aviation Facility. This significant addition is part of the airport’s broader growth strategy to enhance its capabilities for both general aviation and international commercial flights.
The $29.1 million project is being completed in two main phases. Phase 4a, currently underway, which focuses on constructing the building’s exterior shell. Recent milestones include the installation of metal wall panels, giving shape and definition to the structure, while framing and MEPFP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection) crews are making steady progress inside to prepare for the next stages.
Once Phase 4a is complete, Phase 4b will begin, which will concentrate on building out the interior spaces. A key feature of the facility will be the inclusion of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection area and a Federal Inspection Station, enhancing the airport’s ability to process international passengers and cargo efficiently.
Completion is on track for late 2025, positioning MidAmerica Airport to better serve a growing number of aviation users while supporting the continued growth of the Metro East region.
We’re proud of Holland Construction Services for their commitment to delivering high-quality infrastructure that supports the region’s future.

Beyond Chatbots: How General-Purpose AI Agents Are Redefining Digital Assistance |
For years, chatbots have served as digital helpers—answering questions, booking appointments, and handling basic customer service. But the launch of general-purpose AI agents, like OpenAI’s latest advancement within ChatGPT, signals that we’re entering a new era of digital assistance—one where AI isn’t just reactive, but capable of acting on your behalf.
From Scripted Responses to Autonomous Action
Traditional chatbots operate within strict boundaries. They’re programmed to respond to predefined prompts and follow scripted workflows, which makes them useful—but limited. In contrast, general-purpose AI agents are designed to:
- Interpret more complex instructions
- Plan multi-step tasks
- Interact with multiple systems or platforms
- Act autonomously while keeping user preferences in mind
This shift means digital assistants are evolving from static tools into dynamic, problem-solving collaborators.
Practical Possibilities
Imagine an AI agent that not only helps you draft an email, but also schedules meetings, researches relevant background information, and even follows up automatically if there’s no response. Or a business AI agent that can manage supply chain updates, monitor competitors, and generate tailored reports—all without constant human oversight.
The potential spans across industries:
-
Healthcare: AI agents managing patient follow-ups and coordinating care teams
- Finance: Agents monitoring markets and automating routine financial tasks
- Personal Productivity: Custom agents optimizing schedules, reminders, and goal tracking
What Sets General-Purpose Agents Apart
What makes these agents different is their ability to reason, plan, and adapt across diverse scenarios. Instead of relying on rigid scripts, they use large language models, like OpenAI’s GPT-4o, to understand context, make decisions, and learn from interactions.
This adaptability opens the door to more personalized, efficient, and proactive support—a major leap from today’s single-function bots.
Moving Forward: Opportunities and Questions
While the possibilities are exciting, the rise of AI agents also raises important questions:
- How do we ensure safety and accountability when agents act autonomously?
- What data privacy measures will be in place?
- How will this technology reshape jobs and industries?
We’re only beginning to understand the full impact of general-purpose AI agents. But one thing is clear: the era of simple chatbots is giving way to a future where AI can truly assist—not just respond.
| | | Budget Pressure in Construction & Facilities Management: The Struggle Is Real (and Fixable) |
Let’s talk about one of the most stressful, anxiety-inducing realities for construction buyers and facility managers: budget pressure. You know the drill—costs are up, timelines are tighter, and the expectations? Oh, those are somehow bigger than ever.
Whether you're overseeing a new build or managing a 30-year-old facility, the pressure to stay within budget while juggling quality, compliance, and performance is enough to make anyone want to throw their hard hat across the room.
Why Is Budget Pressure So Brutal Right Now?
Here’s the short list of culprits:
-
Skyrocketing material costs (thanks, supply chain chaos)
-
Labor shortages driving up wages and slowing productivity
-
Project scope creep from evolving stakeholder demands
- Poor cost forecasting or outdated budgeting tools
-
Emergency repairs or deferred maintenance snowballing into capital crises
Sound familiar? Yeah. It’s not just you.
🛠️ 5 Smart Ways to Tackle Budget Pressure Head-On
-
Start with Better Forecasting Tools Stop relying on last year’s spreadsheet and a prayer. Today’s tech—think AI-powered estimators or cloud-based dashboards—can give you real-time data and historical benchmarking to make smarter decisions.
-
Embrace Value Engineering (Wisely) Value engineering isn’t about cheapening your project—it’s about optimizing it. Bringing together your architects, engineers, and contractors early can uncover creative alternatives that save money without sacrificing quality.
-
Implement Lifecycle Costing Instead of just looking at up-front costs, evaluate how a system or material will perform over 10, 15, or 30 years. Cheaper now doesn’t always mean cheaper later. Facility managers, especially, know the pain of inheriting short-term thinking.
-
Educate Stakeholders (Internally and Externally) Sometimes the real budget buster is a lack of understanding. Get buy-in early, explain what choices cost, and advocate for contingency buffers. Transparency can prevent expensive surprises down the line.
-
Stay Proactive with Preventive Maintenance Facilities folks: your best budget tool might be a wrench. Preventive maintenance extends the life of your systems, avoids emergencies, and keeps capital budgets under control. If you don’t have a plan, it’s time.

| | | The Neuroscience of Connection: Why We Work Better Together |
We often think of productivity as a result of skills, tools, or strategies—but neuroscience shows that our greatest advantage may be our natural ability to connect with others.
Humans are biologically wired for connection. When we collaborate, our brains activate areas that boost problem-solving, creativity, and decision-making. Even more, interacting with others triggers the release of oxytocin, the “bonding hormone,” which enhances trust and empathy.
So how does this impact teamwork?
Connected teams communicate better, innovate more freely, and perform at higher levels. On the flip side, disconnection at work leads to stress, isolation, and lower engagement. In remote and hybrid settings, the risk of disconnection is even greater, making intentional efforts to foster connection more important than ever.
Leaders can strengthen team bonds by
- Encouraging open dialogue
- Recognizing contributions
- Model authenticity and empathy
- Creating space for personal connection—not just task management
At the core, neuroscience reminds us that we’re not just better with others—we’re built for it. When we work together, we thrive.

Everyday Excellence, One Habit at a Time with Jeff Koziatek
Habit #30: Weeding
Just because something is good, or you are good at it, doesn't mean you HAVE to do it.
Your time and energy are limited.
Running in too many directions at the same time, can slow you down and keep your performance mediocre at best.
Reach peak performance by focusing on what most aligns with your values and purpose - and pull out and throw out the rest.
Remember:
Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
Performance Tips:
● Not everything that needs to be done, needs to be done by you.
● Distractions are like weeds in a garden that pull valuable resources away from more beautiful and fruitful plants. Pull them out!
