Concerns about utility bills, data centers, and pollution show why Black Americans want action from elected officials. For Elijah Lee, protecting the environment has always been about what’s happening close to home. He grew up in a predominantly Black, low-income community in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and went to school next to a paper mill that filled the air with pollution. He always wondered why it seemed like the only employment option for people in town. Now, as data centers expand in Virginia, where he moved as a teenager, he fears the political promises of data center-driven economic growth won’t reach him or his generation.

100,000 Black men during early voting
| |
It’s been five weeks since national organizing calls began as leaders of the NAACP, the National Urban League (NUL), and other nonpartisan organizations pledged to encourage thousands of Black men to vote early in the 2026 midterm elections. Now, with fewer than two weeks remaining before Election Day on Nov. 3, a coalition of leading civil rights, civic, Black Greek, and community organizations have seen the fruits of their labor. A nationwide Week of Action will culminate in the inaugural National Black Man Voter Day on Oct. 24. According to NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson the goal is to mobilize 100,000 Black men to exercise their constitutional right before Election Day, using the various options available in their respective states or districts.

This week I am returning to Florida A&M University for Homecoming, and it’s hard to believe that 50 years ago, in the fall of 1976, I first walked on the campus as an eager college freshman. I had no clue what to expect or what my next step would be. I just knew I wanted to be a journalist, and I would get my degree from this great institution.

Since President Donald Trump’s return to office, federal immigration agents have secretly detained people — cutting them off from lawyers and family — for hours, days and, in some cases, weeks, according to numerous media reports.A man vanished for five days last December while Immigration and Customs Enforcement shuttled him through detention camps around the country, as The Marshall Project previously reported. By the time his family learned where he was, he’d been deported to Somalia.

President Donald Trump made a noticeable slip during a recent campaign rally, in which he celebrated the poverty rate among African Americans. While trying to make the case to voters that his policies are having a positive impact on the U.S. economy in Wichita, Kansas, Trump declared, “We have the most jobs. We have the best numbers. By the way, your 401k is the highest ever, the stock market, the highest ever.” The president continued, “African American poverty, Hispanic American poverty.

We receive so many different feature requests each week, but this one stood out. Just imagine playing in the sport that you love only to be taken out by an injury that not only changes the course of your life but also changes what you look like. That’s exactly what happened to Robby. Back when he was in high school, Robert Browne lived and breathed football—and was good enough to earn a college scholarship for it. But he fractured his knee toward the end of his junior year, which required several surgeries just to repair the damage.

DAILY REMEMBRANCE
Grief has colored my world. Such stark contrasts between the then and now.
How bland the white days when I can't see what is before me.
In a fog of non-distinctiveness.
No form or fashion to my existence on these days, and yet, I see light.
Something bright and warm beckoning me.
The dark days of color bring with them such darkness
that I can't venture out.
I stay still, sometimes unable to even speak.
Wrapping myself within myself.
Going round and round and round.
Seeing burst of red through the spinning.
Marking my journey before and after.
Marking my journey round and round in what seems
a senseless rotation.
Marking my journey from then to now.
