I'm in the middle of a dominoes rivalry with one of our residents. She beat me the first week. I got her back the second. We're squaring up for the grand finale soon, and neither of us is backing down.
It's a small thing, but it's one of my favorite parts of this job — a reminder that life at Celia's House isn't only about illness. It's board games, puzzles, and garden tours. It's staff who know exactly how someone likes their coffee, and residents who still have grand finales left to play.
Since our doors opened in 2018, we've welcomed 843 residents, 65 of them so far this year alone. Right now, all 12 of our rooms are full, and three more families are waiting for a room to become available.
A donor I recently called to thank told me she'll keep giving for as long as she lives, because of the care her husband received at Celia's House in 2024. She called it "the house of angels." It's exactly what our staff and volunteers create for every resident who walks through our doors.
That kind of care doesn't happen by accident, and it doesn't come free, though at Celia's House, a family's ability to pay has never been part of that equation. Every resident is welcomed based on need, not finances, and that's only possible because of donors who make up the difference.
This fall, we're launching a campaign to make sure it keeps happening for the residents waiting right now, and those we haven't met yet.
More details soon, including new ways to be part of it for the long haul.
In the meantime, monthly giving is one of the simplest ways to help. Visit sofriendsofhospice.org/donate-online and under “Donation Information/Frequency,” select "Monthly” from the drop-down menu.
We'll see you this fall — grand finale included.
