Change, Growth, and Love

Looking to the Future

Dwight Wilson, Executive Director

I’m delighted to report that due to the growth and health of Southern Oregon Friends of Hospice, our 2025 Board retreat agenda has expanded from setting annual goals and objectives to formulating strategies that will ensure the organization's sustainability well into the future.

Our 2025 plan focuses on these important areas:

  • Maintain the exceptional quality of care that Celia’s House is known for
  • Support the high level of Board governance and competency by planning for continuity of Board and administrative leadership
  • Support fundraising goals to uphold and sustain our model of care
  • We anticipate 70% of revenue from services and 30% from donations
  • Encourage The HUB’s continued growth through outreach and marketing
  • Expand end-of-life education and care options to a wider audience

With your ongoing generosity and support, I look forward to our achievements in 2025 and will report back to you in our year-end annual report.

A Fond Farewell to Lily Herwald

Cheryl French, Volunteer

“From the moment I interviewed for the Development Director position at Southern Oregon Friends of Hospice, I knew Celia’s House was a special place. I was deeply moved by the kindness, authenticity, and warmth I felt everywhere and with everyone met. The culture was already in place, and it resonated with the way I live my life.Lily

When Lily Herwald joined our organization as Development Director, she immersed herself in every aspect, especially Celia’s House. She built meaningful relationships with donors, clinical staff, The HUB team, volunteers, and Board members. She sat at the bedside with residents and connected with their families. She eagerly stepped into ongoing projects and has been very involved in the culture of Celia’s House.

Executive Director Dwight Wilson shared, "Lily played a large role in creating the cohesion of all pieces of the organization because of who she is.”

Her contributions were enormous and included:

  • Building up our Care Fund to give us the ability to serve everyone who needs us
  • Successfully meeting fundraising goals each year
  • Creating an annual community event, June in Bloom
  • Playing an essential role in supporting our education and outreach efforts
  • Initiating a comprehensive and creative approach to the organization’s annual report
  • In addition to her position as Development Director, she chaired the Communication Committee to convey to the public how meaningful and sacred Celia’s House is

Lily is stepping away to pursue new personal and creative endeavors but plans to return as a volunteer. Her role is being divided between two capable leaders:

  • Alexandria Castelo, Marketing and Communications Director
  • Kendra Lellis, Development Director, will be introduced in next month’s newsletter

Alexandria offered appreciation for the time she and Lily worked together, “Lily has been a better mentor and teammate than I ever could have asked for. I have learned so much from working alongside her—things I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I admire her ability to talk openly about her own mortality and follow her heart. I am so grateful to be a part of such a wonderful organization, and I am eager to continue serving Celia's House and the community in my new role.”

Lily said she leaves with confidence and joy, knowing that Kendra is joining the organization. “We are in such good hands, and I have enormous faith in our future.”

A Message from Lily

A Day of Love at Celia's House

This Valentine's Day, our treasured volunteer, Ellen, alongside a few generous others, put together beautiful bouquets to deliver to our residents and their families. Meanwhile, our Volunteer Coordinator, Brie, and her daughters took the time to make hand-made boxes with treats inside for all our staff. It was a day filled with generosity and love!

The HUB - Did You Know?

Donated items not sold at The HUB are eventually packed up and regifted to The Yreka Hospice Shop in historic downtown Yreka.

The Yreka Hospice Shop is a nonprofit resale store run by wonderful volunteers. Just as we support and raise funds for Celia’s House in Southern Oregon, they also raise money for end-of-life care in Northern California for Madrone Hospice Inc. With the help of countless volunteers and donations, they were able to complete The Madrone House in 1999 and have provided hospice care for over 1,000 patients over that time.

The Hospice Shop is located at 209 West Miner Street, Yreka, CA.

The HUB will be closed March 22 - March 30 for deep cleaning and improvements. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to sharing our fresh, clean space with you when we're back!

Quotes From Families

"This is what I call "dying with dignity"- a safe, peaceful place for those who are in their end of life stage where they can transition with dignity and respect. Many volunteers spend hours providing comfort and care in addition to the medical staff, not to forget the four-legged friends who will sit bedside like no other." -Helena
