The Power of Community

Meeting the Challenge of Uncertainty

Dwight Wilson, Executive Director

Most of you are aware that running a nonprofit organization can be a struggle, especially when you don’t know what challenges await you in the future. Adding to this uncertainty are changes in federal tax and social support policies. Many organizations that rely on federal contracts will feel the effects of these changes.

Fortunately, the financial health of Southern Oregon Friends of Hospice is not dependent on federal contracts, and the professionals on our Board Finance committee are aware of the need for the organization to remain healthy and sustainable into the future. Our financial transparency is demonstrated by the Form 990, which is available on our website for public viewing: https://sofriendsofhospice.org/view-our-990/

Over the years we have managed our budget and model of care successfully with fundraising support; however, going forward, changes in Medicaid and the tax code raise new challenges. The impact of Medicaid changes is uncertain and will likely make it harder for some people to qualify for or stay in the program.

Around 35% of our residents are supported by Medicaid. The new tax rules on charitable donations could impact our nonprofit donations giving, as well as our model of care. Our organization monitors these changes and continues to be proactive in planning. We encourage you to talk with your accounting and estate planning representatives.

We will depend on fundraising more than ever to provide care for those needing financial assistance for our services. We appreciate your ongoing support for our mission, and, if you can, consider increasing your contribution to our summer campaign so we can address future challenges together.

Please let those you know they are welcome to tour Celia’s House or call me with questions, 650-743-7997.

Share the Care

Southern Oregon Friends of Hospice is truly special because of the support we provide: compassionate, around-the-clock care for individuals and their families. At Celia’s House, we offer a peaceful home where everyone is welcome—including those who are uninsured, underinsured, or facing financial hardship.

Unlike hospitals or for-profit providers, we receive no guaranteed funding beyond Medicaid, insurance, and private payments. These rarely cover the full cost of our comprehensive services.

Your summer gift helps make up the difference.

Your contribution ensures every individual has access to the end-of-life care they need and deserve. When you give, you bring peace, dignity, and comfort to someone’s final days. Please share the care today.

We Have New Videos!

We have long known that important end-of-life discussions are difficult for most people and don’t always happen. We also know that attitudes and concerns toward death and dying differ across cultures.

To learn more about these cultural differences in the Latinx community, in 2022 Southern Oregon Friends of Hospice applied for and received a grant from Oregon Health and Science University’s Knight Cancer Institute to interview Latinx cancer patients or their family members. The interviews sought to understand the barriers they face in accessing palliative and end-of-life care. With help from OHSU faculty and nursing students, interviews were conducted in Spanish.

This video by The Knight Cancer Institute highlights the beauty of Celia’s House and our special approach to end-of-life care, and discusses the Latinx project in more detail.

Next is our brand new June in Bloom, showcasing some special moments from our annual community event and fundraiser. Please plan to join us June 7, 2026.

Quotes From Families

"Everyone is a gift. The volunteers are also incredibly helpful. There are no words to describe how caring and lovely these people are. They are forever in my mind as incredible beings. I am very grateful and will never forget. I only wish I could somehow return all the kindness that came my way. The home is exquisite and the care is the very best." -Karen
