Meeting the Challenge of Uncertainty
Dwight Wilson, Executive Director
Most of you are aware that running a nonprofit organization can be a struggle, especially when you don’t know what challenges await you in the future. Adding to this uncertainty are changes in federal tax and social support policies. Many organizations that rely on federal contracts will feel the effects of these changes.
Fortunately, the financial health of Southern Oregon Friends of Hospice is not dependent on federal contracts, and the professionals on our Board Finance committee are aware of the need for the organization to remain healthy and sustainable into the future. Our financial transparency is demonstrated by the Form 990, which is available on our website for public viewing: https://sofriendsofhospice.org/view-our-990/
Over the years we have managed our budget and model of care successfully with fundraising support; however, going forward, changes in Medicaid and the tax code raise new challenges. The impact of Medicaid changes is uncertain and will likely make it harder for some people to qualify for or stay in the program.
Around 35% of our residents are supported by Medicaid. The new tax rules on charitable donations could impact our nonprofit donations giving, as well as our model of care. Our organization monitors these changes and continues to be proactive in planning. We encourage you to talk with your accounting and estate planning representatives.
We will depend on fundraising more than ever to provide care for those needing financial assistance for our services. We appreciate your ongoing support for our mission, and, if you can, consider increasing your contribution to our summer campaign so we can address future challenges together.
Please let those you know they are welcome to tour Celia’s House or call me with questions, 650-743-7997.
