Hearts for Hospice

This season, we invite you to join our Hearts for Hospice campaign — a celebration of compassion, remembrance, and community.

Each heart represents a gesture of love for those receiving hospice care, as well as a tribute to the families, volunteers, and caregivers who walk beside them.

This week, a family member shared:

"I was the full-time caregiver and now I can sit at bedside and visit with my wife while she receives the care she needs. The staff is always checking in on me, too, asking how I'm doing and if I need anything. I could not ask for a better arrangement during this time."

Your contribution helps us continue providing comfort, dignity, and peace to residents and their loved ones.

Finding Moments of Joy During

a Terminal Illness

By Cheryl French, Volunteer

For hospice residents and their families, the word joy and the experience of joy can look different as the end of life approaches. Chaplains Khaliqa Baqi and Mary Piper recall how they participated in or observed special moments of joy at Celia’s House.

Two men, each married for several decades, formed a special supportive friendship while their wives were residents. Their bond became a source of comfort and strength.

One resident, an avid outdoorsman who was confined to his bed, found solace through a thoughtful act by the chaplain. She cut pine boughs from the garden and placed them beside his bed to provide the familiar scent of his beloved forest.

Therapy animals bring joy and comfort. A neighbor’s cat, Murphy, regularly visits Celia’s House and knows which residents enjoy his purring and will often lie at the foot of their beds. Several volunteers bring well-trained therapy dogs to visit residents, if they would like.

A former pastor and Celia’s House resident played the piano each day for other residents, as well as by phone to former parishioners, during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

In one deeply touching moment at Celia’s House, a family gathered around their loved one during her final days. The resident was unable to speak, and as the family sat together, Celia’s House chef gently asked what her favorite food was. Instantly, the family replied in unison: “tapioca pudding.” Recognizing the comfort this simple dish brought, the chef prepared tapioca pudding for everyone in the room. The familiar flavor seemed to rouse the resident. She awakened just long enough to share heartfelt words with each person present.

Ultimately, finding joy during a terminal illness is about embracing what remains – love, meaning, and presence.

"What a special place to be at the end of life.

If you're not able to be in your own home, Celia's House is most certainly the next best option." - K
